A new composting toilet is being offered by RP. The toilet is supposed to allow extended off-grid time. The poop sits in the toilet bubbling away & a small fan takes excess moisture & smells out of the van. The entire unit easily comes out to make a big shower room. The urine is emtied every 2 or 3 days from a container & poop only needs a clean out every few months. What does the group think of this? Extended off-grid appears to us, plus it means that we don't need to allocate a "sealed" cupboard for a spare cassette.

In the summer, when roof vents are open will that fan extraction not recirculate back through the vents, unless the vent is a telescopic device 🤷‍♂️

I’m not sure, but believe they are quite heavy to fit in the van 🤷🏼‍♂️

Lots of narrowboaters have fallen for similar devices with the mistaken belief that they could just dump the solid matter in normal waste containers (as they don’t have the space to compost the waste properly). The description you provide does make that product seem a little different in that it appears to have a holding tank. However, when it comes to emptying it the more recent deposits won’t have decomposed so it’s difficult to imagine it being effective.

Wow, emptying that sounds a bit like that song the 7 dwarfs sing in "Snow White and the seven dwarfs".
Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go, with a bucket and spade and hand grenade, hi ho, hi ho, :giggle:

Is it an expensive RP option? I would want to speak to and go see people who have this system on their Motorhome.

Hi Nick. We have optioned this on a Rebellion 2. We like the idea of not having to empty too often..they claim 25-30 uses, but even if it was 20 uses that’s still 10 days without emptying for two adults. Plus side is it doesn’t use any water either so that’s a saving.👍

Have manhandled one at the factory, and can say that they aren’t too heavy to move out of the way to expose fully the large shower tray. We still have time to think this over some more before deciding to go for it full on. I do like the concept of it though I must say. 👍

I had a bit tread of their web site and read this bit,

"having several bins at various stages of the composting process helps keep the cycle moving"

It made me think that the waste might not be ready to go into a bag straight away, if you get my drift.

Sound like you will end up with a van full of sh*t.

Most just bag it up Martin and then put it in the normal rubbish as proper composting takes between 9 and 12months. We will use biodegradable bags if we decide to go with this option.

So, the space not taken with a second cassette will be taken with compost bins of "here's one I prepared earlier " if using the toilet as designed? I'm not dismissing the concept, but it does call for quite a mindset shift to accommodate the new regime.

I have no need to complete the composting process, why should I? It just goes in our septic tank. So no use for multi buckets.

This thread has turned into one big argument fest. I have no interest in arguing. Thread will be deleted.

👍 I wasn’t sure if they were suggesting that you needed to leave it to mature before you could bag it, better than the burning ones I would think to be honest, I was reading the thread on liner-treff about the one that seals it all up in a bag, that divided opinion as well😏

What a strange post, you put a thread up about what could be a contenious subject there are no arguments but you don't like the replies, so you want it deleted.

not sure what you expected, an opinion is unlikely to always agree with yours 🤔👍

BTW what do you think of them ?

Surely the idea of a composting toilet is that you compost the contents and have a nice furtilizer after 9 months. Bagging it and throwing it in a bin completely defeats the object.
To do it properly it would mean towing a trailer full of sh*t.

We watch 'Foxs Afloat' on Utube and they had one of these separating toilets which they added coconut fibre to, it had a 'churn' system to mix the contents and help with composting, more accurately just helping to mix it up and help dry it out. When they didn't get the mix right though they described it as 'fudgy'! 😆

🤷‍♂️ More of a lively discussion topic about an old process brought up to date and it's feasibility in a motorhome.Sorry if the comments have seemed pointed,or personnel, they wouldn't have been posted as that being the motive.
Mike.

Can we have a "yuk " emoticom as well Jim.

Somewhat!

If they were a little more honest about it and didn’t use the term ‘composting’ and simply referred to them as separating toilets then perhaps expectations might be managed a little better.

However that would then create resistance because of the binning part of bagging and binning the waste. Lots of folks, and organisations, aren’t to sure about the social acceptability of that course of action.

Nor how the liquid waste is disposed of ... I suspect many gallons of urine ends up in rainwater drains etc and not in sewers.

I would love to think I could compost the contents in the proper manner Lenny, but in truth it’s not doable when your on the road for any length of time, unless you save them up for when you get home 😬 and you could end up with a nice few kg eating into the payload 🫣 Don’t doggy poo bags end up in normal trash? Asking for a friend 😆😆

Well when your out in the bush, I think the nearest tree or bush would suffice👍 After all, it’s what I would do if out fishing or on a long walk for instance.

If it was a campsite, well the elsan is as good a place as any. 😊

But why call it a composting toilet, total bollocks then.

I dunno mate. 🤷‍♂️ Like I say though, if I had my own composting heap that’s what I would do but, we are full time so makes it bit hard to do. It’s just a nice thought that’s all. Still, at least no chemicals will be involved, so all natural that way.
