We picked up our new Carthago yesterday. our insurance is due for renewal on 10th of August, so NFU doesn’t want an fees for change over, they have given us quote for renewal.
I have just telephoned L&V for a quote, it’s a bit cheaper than NFU, but they didn’t want to know the make other than Fiat or the value of the new vehicle. When I queried it he said that they will sort out the value when and if we claim.
ive never been told that before, can anyone explain please.

Have a search for another similar thread on the forum.
Apparently this is totally normal for LV. It is in fact the basis that all insurance companies work on unless you have an agreed value policy which is highly unlikely/unusual.
They normally only want a value, etc for quoting purposes......regardless of what you paid for the MH you will only get market value.
It's quite a refreshing approach to take.
Regards, Rob.

We have LV= insurance and they don’t ask to many questions certainly don’t need tracker or even ask about alarms, so far not needed to claim but I consider £412 for fully comp including unlimited windscreen and UK and EU breakdown pretty good on a van value of £80000 +👍😊

I couldn’t understand them not wanting a value. They are about £20 over NFU price, NFU also offer 2 years replacement in case of being stolen.
LV and NFU are the only companies I could find that don’t ask for a tracker for higher value Motorhomes.

Why would you not want a tracker may I ask?
If you went with Comfort you would possibly save the cost of the tracker via premium..just saying

I don't particularly want to have something else to have to remember to pay every year. Nor do I want my motorhome back if some scroat had been rummaging through it. Even though the vehicle is 'worth' a lot of money we keep little of value in it.
Out of interest I will get a quote from Comfort.

Personally I would go for a Strikeback alarm and non starter the subscription for the non starter is reasonable and you can track it also sends information texts about starting and alarm activations battery status etc, and you can arm disarm with your phone😊it also stops your van from being taken in the first place so no tracker required😊

If I bought a new £80k motorhome I'd have the same Blocker, Tracker and Alarm fitted as a minimum.

We insure with Comfort/Aviva, we have a Blocker, Tracker and Alarm and also secure storage, for a motorhome which if it was new (which it isnt) would cost around £80k to replace.
We pay £400 PA including recovery.

I have just got a quote from Comfort. She was very helpful until she quoted over £1500 plus a Tracker.
Do you live in a dodgy post code, and keep it on the street ?

I suspect Comfort would reduce that quote by well over a grand if you said secure storage

Is that including your tracker subscription?🤔
£58 PA for tracker subscription
and about £400 PA for insurance including recovery
£600 PA for secure storage

and we live in the expensive south east, so I'd expect a similar quote based in North Yorkshire to be cheaper, unless they deliberately up the quote for everyone in Yorkshire, knowing full well that whatever they quote the reply will be 'Ow MUCH !

We have a purpose built garage, electric gates, Casper ( but he needs waking up nowadays), we also live in a very good postcode insurance wise.
I don't understand the quote unless I misheard her but I told her how much NFU want, which is £413 and she said that I must have got NFU and LV wrong.

I was too surprised to ask Ow Much.

I know with us in the sunny south east that Comfort (and others) would not insure us at all without secure storage, a tracker and a Thatcham quality alarm. The engine blocker is just a bonus.

Bottom line is like many motorhomes, you need more that a bunch of keys or a door opening tool to steal our van.

If your average scrote realises that motorhomes are rarely a soft target then that is better for all of us (and our insurance quotes)

We park on our driveway as don’t want to have to travel to work on the van if need to also we are ready to go without the hassle of getting in and out of storage.😊👍

All that convenience comes at a price of course on your insurance premium

Storage near me is extortionate my post code is m41 storage is m31 cost is somewhere between 700 and 1000 pa my insurance was 643 with no tracker / alarm just had to have an immobiliser van parked on drive , so it's not always cheaper to put vans in storage.

Manchester postcodes do seem high, land is at a premium isnt it

I just insured our motorhome through Adrian Flux/Trinity House and they stated the value of any claim for total loss would be based on an assessment and not the value I'd entered on the application i.e. the purchase value.

I was less than impressed with AF :(

Sounds rather suspicious to me and seems it might be another way insurers 'wriggle out'.

Not at all, insurer only ever pay out on the market value at the time of loss, not the value/opinion YOU state at the time of inception
Only exceptions are agreed valuations at on set ( ie an unusual /classic/one off vehicle or in the case of new for old cover on a relatively new van

I went with Comfort for the PVC when bought new because their policy gave new-for-old replacement cover for the first 3 years.

With a different insurer you could pay for a separate GAP policy I suppose.

Sorry, my message was a little misleading - I was okay with the value statement however, I was not impressed with the communications with AF .

When we got our tracker we took the view that we were going to keep the MH for a number of years so took out a lifetime subscription.....approx £400 I think.....no need to remember renewals ! Happy days.

I found AF quite ‘hard work’ when i had a kit car insured through them in a former life

I like Comfort because they specialise in leisure so
  • They always know what you are talking about when you ring them
  • The policy is with Aviva, what I would call a frontline insurer
  • Consistently the best value, especially without breakdown cover( which i never needed)

Thanks all.
I’m going to stay with NFU, No tracker required, £405.18 for £150,000 MH. I’m on a good no claims and a mutual bonus. Two years replacement as new if stolen or written off. £50 excess windscreen cover, and protected no claims.

Totally agree. If we didn't opt for their breakdown cover our premium would be £270 with up to £5k personal effects on a van the dealers now want £63k for after the 2022 models arrive. All they wanted was a copy of the approved tracker installation cert' as it's a Ford. Our Harrogate post code is category 'C' and it's kept on our driveway.

They did put a value the motorhome, £56,300, which was £2k more than what we paid so if the worst happened it would cover the cost of a same spec, same year vehicle.

Been with them for years.
