Hi

Just planning a week from 11 October touring somewhere.
We were thinking Northumberland as we've not been there.
Any advice of site and places of interest would be great.
We do like a good meal in a local pub in walking distance to the site.

I am currently sat in my van on the CC site, Old Hartley, near Whitley Bay. There is a pub just outside of the site and the sea views are fantastic. Great walking and cycling direct from the site. Just need to check when the site closes. Have also stopped at the C &CC site at Beadnell Bay, again they're are pubs nearby but I haven't eaten at any of them. I love this coast and have noticed that the majority of car parks don't have height barriers.

This is a good one not far from Craster and within 10 mins walking distance of a nice village pub for food. Also close to lots of attractions. Nice cycle /walk to craster, dunstanton castle. 2 must do's - shiels trip to the Farne islands to see the seals and a trip to Holy island.

Dunstan Hill C&CC site is quite nice. 15 minutes walk to the beach and about 15 - 20 minute walk in to the village of Embleton where there is a pub called the Greys Inn which does good reasonably priced food and decent ales.

Ill second the dunstan hill site. Used it a couple times and liked it.
For me the whole northumberland coast is a beautiful place and holy island as said is a must.

Have a look at these:- Herding Hill Farm, Shield Hill, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, NE49 9NW.
OR:-

  • Hadrian's Wall Camping & Caravan Site
  • Melkridge Tilery
  • Melkridge
  • Northumberland
  • NE49 9PG
  • -
  • GPS Coordinates
  • N54.98620° / W2.42231°
  • -
  • The site lies approximately 400m south of the B6318, 5 miles east of Greenhead and between Milecastle Inn(nice food and ales) and the Twice Brewed Inn.
  • Not far from(walkable)the Roman Wall, or as posh folk call it "Hadrians Wall":roflmto:

Do Not go on the Seahouses Site it costs an arm and a leg. We did one night and were giving a rebate of £ 47=00p. as we did not use any facilitis. It ctill cost us £ 37-oop. load of robbers keep well away.

Kielder Water is also lovely but expensive. Pub more or less on site.

Obviously if you had no intentions of using facilities, it would be pointless using site if you can get somewhere cheaper in area. Think they're charging 25 a night low season but higher at weekends.

We noticed as we drove up the lake from Kielder to the village 2 or 3 nice looking wilding spots. Not sure if they are "allowed" ones or not but people were using them.

I would agree with that. Take a nice walk along the coastal path to Craster, have a drink in the pub, buy some local kippers from the smokehouse and then get a bus back.

Gave you two places near Haltwhistle. From both sites the Roman Wall is well within walking distance.

I came to Northumberland 3 years ago and have never left, apart from brief trips.
Fabulous area.
Incidentally there was a discussion on BBC Newcastle this morning :- Which is best for holidays, Cornwall or Northumberland?

I don`t need to tell you which won!!!

Best of both. You have covered the fabulous coastline and a look at the Roman wall. Also drop me a pm and I will give you a both scenic and informational route.
