Not strictly speaking a motorhome question but it could well be relevant to some of us (1 Viewer)

it is

when we are in Spain we spend on average 100 euros a day, that's before we pay for site fees, gas used or whatever else, admitted we don't skimp on anything.

from me alone, Spain this winter could possibly lose around 9000 euros which i doubt they'll even bat an eyelid, but times that by say 1000 (visitors) maybe a lot more I don't really know, and that nows totals around 9 million euros, makes you study a bit doesn't it. This is just motor homers btw not all the other people who are usually over their.

Anyway this is a million miles away from my mate Willy and his possible predicament ;)

Actually he's not got a predicament really has he, he's been classed as being blase and needs the book thrown at him, he's brought the whole world tumbling around him but doesn't give a dam, shame on him and I hope he's hung drawn and quartered then beheaded and it spiked onto the front of the Tower of London gates like the good old days
What’s his van like?;)

I think the EU will be quite harsh on Brits to make an example of us, probably a good idea to see exactly what the penalties are before overstaying. The consequences of overstaying visa in USA are numerous and harsh; from having to secure a new visa to return, to facing up to a 10 year bar from re-entering the country. At our age, that would be nearly all of our future travel plans to the EU scuppered, not sure I’d want to take that chance but good luck to your mate. I look forward to your updates.(y)

Just had a little google

What Consequences Will Britons Face for Overstaying in EU?

The consequences that a British national may face for staying in the EU longer than permitted depend a lot on the country where he/she is caught overstaying, as well as the number of days overstayed.

Since there is no common policy for penalties for overstayers, the Member States may apply the penalties differently, some by being softer and other harsher, like for example Germany.

Despite their differences, in general, the Member States apply the following penalties on those caught overstaying, including on Britons staring from this year:

  • Deportation – All third-country citizens caught overstaying the number of permitted days of stay in the EU are immediately forced to leave the block. Some of the countries will imprison overstayers and deport them by themselves, while others will give overstayers a certain period of hours or days to leave.
  • Fines – One of the most common penalties for overstaying in the Schengen Area is being fined with an amount of money, though the fees vary from one country to another. Fines, are applied alongside with deportation and are not a substitute for it. They may often be followed with an entry ban too.
  • Difficulties in returning to the Schengen – Almost every deported person will face difficulties to travel back to the Schengen Area. They will face prolonged border checks upon entry, and may even be turned back or banned from entering for a certain period.
  • Entry ban – Usually the Member States ban from entering only those who have overstayed for a longer period. Bans are applied for a period of three years or even more.

So I have a life long friend who recently retired, he's run a very successful kitchen business all his working life inherited from his father, he is totally business minded btw, its been his total working life from day dot.

So last October he went to his favourite town in Spain where he has wintered for quite a few years, he's had a lovely time whilst out their as usual, enjoying the weather, cycling and the great mix of people whom he says are quite affluent and don't mess about spending in the local businesses, bars, restaurants. He reckons, has they have all been discussing it together, that each friend/couples spent on average between £500 & £800 every week, week in week out.

Since 31st march 2021 he alone has seen at least 47 friends/couples leave this particular town so that, as I type this, has had quite a knock on effect regarding the local economy, approx 23,500 to 37,500 euros each and every week has been lost due to the 90 day rule, and that is just the people he particularly knows, their will be i'd have thought quite a lot more. And remember this is in one little local town in Spain.

Anyway back to the point, so my mate has booked a flight and he arrives home next saturday, this will mean he has stayed 52 days over the 90 days allowed, so i've just asked him the question.

What will you do if................

His reply was, "nothing, i'll do absolutely nothing, if they fine and jail me, fair enough at least i'll be able to isolate with 3 meals a day thrown in", he was actually saying this tongue in cheek btw.

"If they fine me £1000, well i'll look at that this way, i've had an extra 9 weeks holiday for a grand, i'll take that"

He then said that its his belief that both Spanish and British governments were speaking to each other to see a way through/around this situation, failing to do "something" could well see quite a lot of damage to the Spanish economy and even the possible bankruptcy of 100's of small business in Spain that will/had been badly affected due to the 90 day agreement. Spain he thought will 100% have a very tough time of it economy wise if that is allowed to happen.

So watch this space, he's promised to get in touch with me a few day after he gets home to let me know the backlash if any, so i promise if he does i'll let you all know the outcome.

It could go either way, interesting or boring, lets wait and see.

Happy weekend everyone, have a good one and lets hope the weather keeps fine

Al (y)
The lack of business is not down to 90-180 rule, just now its down to covid. The penalty is not a £1000 euro fine its a ban at the border of up to ten years. I also have had my plans scuppered as we stayed five months over last winter and planned to do it again, however we will now do three Europe and three Morocco or Croatia etc and and back. Most British travel is shorter breaks and the ruling has zero effect on 99pc of the population. So far to the best of my knowledge there are no discussions between us and any other European authorities as the precedent set would not sit well with others.. Like your friend I will still be travelling and spending my money once we are allowed back into Europe. One areas loss will be another's gain. The over all economy will still benefit

I guess the first thing is the individual has to be caught, depending on their story the authorities, given the circumstances may be lenient due to the covid situation.

But this does remind me off witnessing several issues at checkins and boarder controls. We were at Portsmouth waiting to get booked in, the Motorhome in front had Bikes on the rear and as we all know this has to be declared and paid for particularly if its extending the vehicle. The driver decided to argue with the check in woman...who was more than reasonable in explaining the issue and additional cost....more remonstration from said motorhome driver who was getting louder and abusive (All entertaining for the on lookers). Stage 2 escalation security arrives, Driver in agitated and argumentative state has to move his vehicle to one side. Tape measure and markers are produced at this point we moved past and wondered what was going to happen as the Driver was clearly annoyed (possibly embarrassed). We did see angry driver who we assume paid the additional fee being loaded on last and positioned so that he was last off the Ferry.

I guess the motto is be kind, considerate, polite and try to go with what the authorities ask of you. (Customs and boarder control have the power not us however right we think we are)

Dash...thought that was going to have a better ending.. wasn't any different to Line of Duty....
Perhaps another series is forthcoming...
Does anyone know of anyone who has been fined, detained, imprisoned, stoned, motorhome impounded, access back into Schengen denied or any other serious event that might bring it home to others the real problems of overstaying....🤔😲🇪🇦

But thats the whole point, he wasn't locked down and neither were the 100's possibly 1000's who have come home before the 31st March, he in his own words said, "i'll go home when i want to" and to be fair he has done/doing that, its the aftermath, if any, that we are all interested in, or at least some of us are ;)
Sadly your friends attitude to the law seems to be getting more and more popular these days . I must confess though that I do like to see those that think they are above the law brought down a peg or two even more so when they think their wealth gives them extra rights. Please do keep us updated .

I am not in the least bit interested in learning how much money Funsters or their friends spend in a week.

I am a teeny weeny bit interested in wondering why they feel the need to publish this info on the internet though.

I am far more interested in finding out if they are nice, warm hearted and generous people who are happy to share their good luck with folk who are less fortunate...

JJ

PS. I do enjoy reading a thread where folk start throwing their toys out of their pram just to see how close they can get to falling foul of Rule 1.

My only comment on this thread is that perhaps it would have been better to give us the outcome after it has actually happened rather than pontificating on what may or may not happen.

As I read it, he's happy to take the consequences for his actions whatever they may be.
I don't think his wealth comes into it and shouldn't have been brought up in my view.
I am interested to know the outcome

Hi.
Just renewed my Residents permit for Portugal. 25 Euro's for 10 years. Yes.... They can throw me out,but it will not be for the fact of me skimping 25 Euro's. I love it here and cannot see for one second why i would jeopardize the last 12 yrs just to be awkward for 25 euro ...2.5 euro's a year. All our bottoms point towards the floor, whether we spend " LOADS a Money " or jingle along in little villages. Seems like someone is looking for confrontation in Spain.... Each to their own.
