Come on all you people who have thought it through and want to send all these people back where they come from.

How are they going to get there?

Who will decide where "there" is?

Who is going to pay for the transport?

How do you explain who is going to support them?

Where are they going to live?

We can all ask questions you know.

No Mr JJ. I haven't said that.

I thought this thread was still about the people at Calais. I just don't want them to be allowed to come here.

Sending them back where they came from, or anywhere else for that matter, is the Frenchys problem. Ignoring them and hoping we take them, or they escape here, eventually isn't a solution.

If the border forces of other EU states, the Italians in particular, made the slightest attempt to do their jobs properly the French wouldn't have as big a problem as they do. But it is their problem. Not ours.

Currently when a ship rescues a boat load in the Med they are taken to Italy. That sends a message to both migrants and traffickers that they can get away with it.
Taking them back to the country from which their boat sailed would send the message that Europe being a land of milk and honey is a myth. Transport costs would be similar to the present.
As regards support, we are already providing support but people need to support themselves as well. See post #60 above.

Why does the rest of Europe shepherd towards Calais as fast as possible?

Lots of opinion and debate on this thread but to return to the original theme here's an update.

I am sitting at the tunnel terminal, checked in and waiting four the call to our shuttle. We drove up the A16 from Gravelines direction and we have not seen any would be migrants, not a single one, or any evidence of them.

There have been some horrible stories in the UK paper, well Mail and Express if the qualify for that title enough to pu one off travelling. Perhaps the migrants efforts are directed to the ferry port today and I don't say they are not around just reporting our experience today. Others may have a different experience tomorrow, who knows
Must say this is what we have found on lots of visits, in the last couple of years

Like PVCs the best
Deja vu, the last time the world, as we know it, was in such economic and social conflict (1938). The Daily Mail was also speaking up! Of course in retrospect all right thinking people would now condemn it, or would they?

Broken Link Removed
well that certainly is one way to stop a debate and to take a holier than thou view!

Political asylum is different to economic migration.
As others have said all the Calais ones are young men within a certain age bracket - where are the women, the children, the families.
The Calais migrants are not political, not in fear of their lives, simply trying to buck the system, beat the queue and get to a country perceived as "Easy Street".
Political refugees should be protected, the rules are first country of safe haven.
The Calais mob have made their way through several ' safe havens', and are trying to choose their preferred destination. Sorry, that's not how the system works (imperfect as it may be).

Saw a clip of Wellingtons` victory at the Battle of Waterloo re enactment on the news earlier. If it had been a re enactment about Wellingtons `Battle of Calais` (had it taken place there), I think the migrant problem may have disappeared as they saw soldiers with cannon and black powder moving towards them supported by cavalry and then being fired upon . How cruel can history and geography be :)

I wonder if motorhome forums in Turkey have folk posting on them moaning on and on about the MILLIONS of refugees that have settled in the camps there.

Of course Turkey is a far wealthier country than Blighty so probably this helps when it comes to assisting these tragic people.

Turkey is massive.. And it's the correct destination for refugees fleeing Syria.. There has been tensions.. But as they are mainly kept on camps away from the cities is not causing too much of a problem.. Most camps are run by aid agencies and themselves though they were set up by the turkish government.

Jordan and the Lebanon are worst affected. Well over 1 in 3 of the people in Lebanon are now Syrian refugees. The equivalent of over 20 million coming to the UK and Jordan is not faring much better. Huge social tensions building. They are there because munificent Britain is funding camps as close to home as possible.

There seems to be no recognition though that there is little hope of return for them or that unless anyone else picks up the bill we will be paying for decades. But hey we can rest easy we are helping eh?

Surely funding camps as close as possible is prudent. These people hopefully will want to go home at some point. Its good that we're munificent.

It is now three days since I asked these questions. Nobody has yet answered them. I wonder why?
Probably because no one has the answers GJH and these are the reason our boarders should be closed however harsh that may seem

Some people on this thread seem unable to provide solutions and just hand wring and moan about Britain...
Let's here some palatable solutions!

This is the very point. There are no long term, sustainable, solutions based on simply allowing uncontrolled migration between (any) countries.

Where conflicts are going on they must be solved in situ and the only people who can create lasting solutions (as the UK did following its various civil wars) are the people of those countries. It is correct that other countries (including the UK) provide help but we are already doing that in the form of overseas aid.
