We have just spent 21 days crossing Northern Poland in our 4 ton old Hymer

There is not much info on here about this part of the world so here is a little bit.

Our biggest mistake occurred on our way to the Polish border at Szezecin as we went on the A11 motorway east of Berlin. Two or three miles of it must be the worst road surface in Europe. Known as Hitler's Highway this bit has still not been replaced.
Being over 3.5 ton we had to buy an electronic toll box.

We bought a Via Toll box at the border.
No problem at all. The box cost a refundable £25 and we loaded it with 100 euros which was probably much too much but is refundable on leaving the country. The girl told us that was good for 1000 km. To cross the north into Lithuania cost about £11 in tolls. You can trace how much you have spent on it using their App once you have the Via Toll box.

Having heard nightmare stories about the road surfaces we were apprehensive as to whether or not the motorhome would survive ( well it didn't in Lithuania) Most of the main roads were new, some were awful, some minor roads were terrible so we learnt to ask people before setting off for the next day's driving what was good and what was bad.

Diesel cost about 5 zl which is about £1.10

We do not wildcamp if we can help it and in nine stops we spent between 10 and 20 euros for each night. The campsites and camperstops we used were all good and some were much better than that! We used Campercontact for most of them and had no trouble finding space on any of them.

We visited some fascinating historical sites, came across an enormous festival weekend and met some lovely people. We also learnt a lot of history that ashamedly we did not know about.

We took local advice and stayed away from the coast because it was too busy with holidaymakers. We did go to a popular seaside resort and immediately left. It wasn't what we really wanted . The fact that the sea was full of blue green algae did not seem to put people off.

Beer and eating out is cheap, almost Benidorm prices!
Our best buy was four huge sheepskin rugs for the motorhome for £80

We saw only one GB registered motorhome which was going the other way. Most visitors were German Italian or Scandinavian

We then went on to the Baltic States and are still there at the moment.

We drove through Poland last year from the German border near Berlin to Krakow and suffered that very same road! :(

We were apprehensive about the country but were pleasantly surprised at how clean and tidy it was (the parts we saw anyway) and how friendly everyone was. So much so that we will go back and see more sometime.

We did an 8 day guided trek in the Tatra Mountains and learnt a lot of the history from our very knowledgeable guide.

Thanks for your post, it's reminded me that we said we'd return.

Hi BillyM. We're thinking of going to Poland in a couple of weeks, we're heading South from Norway at the moment. We're over 3.5 tons so will also need the Via Toll box. Did you get your deposit money back alright?

A number of years ago I came down from my summer fishing trip in Norway and caught the ferry into northern Germany and went east to Poland across the same motorway you describe. I was travelling in an American RV and the best way I can describe it was akin to driving across a ploughed field. Nothing travelled faster than 15kms per hour on that motorway, and it almost destroyed my RV. The surface was concrete that had been broken up and not been repaired since Adolf had it built. After about 5 kms I pulled off and took the side road, finished up buying a load of junk that was for sale at the side of the road.

We haven't gone back yet. We are getting there slowly from Estonia. We know we can electronically redeem anything left from the tolls via their App but will have to call in near a border to hand back the box. If it means a big detour we will hang onto it.

The Via Toll website in English is good. They also answer e mails if required!

As for the German motorway !
"...renovation of the A11 is due to start in 2015"

To be fair, the Westbound side has been done .
It is way worse than those rumble strips in the picture for 2.5 miles or so. I will never do that bit again.
