Mrs T and I have visited the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland many times over the years but we have never visited the extreme north coast nor have we ever taken a motorhome and this is something we are considering next year.

It appears we have two viable options for the ferry; Birkenhead to Belfast or Cairnryan to Belfast. Now as Toadifact Towers is over five hours from Cairnryan I am tempted to go from Birkenhead. Could anyone give advantages/disadvantages of the above routes please?

Im over 6 hours from Cairnryan and it's my preferred route. Its mainly due to the fact that it's a lovely drive from the A1 across the pennines onwards plus only 2 hours on the ferry vs 8 hours on the Birkenhead one.

We went to the south last year from Liverpool/Dublin - great but a long crossing. Plus Dublin port is a nightmare to get to
I've just checked out the Cairnyan alternative and we can buy a return ticket for less than £400 in June/July.
That could be the plan this year

Consider Holyhead to Dublin also.

I have just driven from Falmouth to Cairn Ryan for the ferry to Belfast, seemed the preferred option for sea crossings in February, only 2 hours if weather is pants. Just bought a motor home in Antrim, so the drive back will be a good test.

there are two companies operating out of cairn Ryan, P&O who sail into larne which is not that far north of Belfast and ideal for a trip around the coast road and up to the north coast.. Stena sail into Belfast but the port is only minutes drive out on to the m2 and then onto the same coast road up to the glens af Antrim and beyond(y) ..those are your options out of cairn Ryan..
