Hi
We are hoping to travel to France for the first time, and only want to travel maybe about 2 hours from the tunnel or Calais, still unsure , would like places to walk to because the the wife likes a tipple and snack,🤔 any advice a would be grateful for
Cheers
Jeff

Camping Sainte Claire at Neufchatel-en-Bray is a good choice. A couple of hours easy drive south from Calais.

Handy for the autoroute (A28), Aldi, Lidl and and E.Leclerc supermarket, minutes away including cheap fuel.

Nice town too, with plenty to see and do locally. There is a choice of a full campsite or a commercial aire next door in the same ownership.

We use the campsite quite regularly as a stopover, but I know some Funsters enjoying staying there longer. Good facilities on the campsite, including bar and restaurant and all well kept.

Was always an ACSI discount site, note sure if it still is? But the price is pretty reasonable in any case.

We had a few days at Le Touquet last year. It’s about an hour from the tunnel. Interesting place and easily walkable into town from the campsite. If I remember correctly about 1Km. Caravaning Stoneham was the site we used. We would go again.

Camping Saint Nicolas in Le Bec Hellouin is at the limit of your 2 hours but nice village and some great walks along the old railway in either direction.

also, Camping Saint claire in Neufchatel en brey plenty of long walks and all facilities near by.

we only ever have used both of these as stop over but pleasant places.

Its in the 2022 ACSI. 16 euros with 6 amps electric. Upgrade to 10 amps for 2 euros.

Le Crotoy for us. Depends on what services you want. This is a basic aires, but in a brilliant position. Walking distance into town and some of the best fish restaurants and bars.

Laon is a fraction over your 2 hours, but amazing, providing you don't mind your little walk being seriously uphill. Much more interesting than most places on the coast.

We stop at lovely wee Aire by the river in Pont de L'Arche,2 mins from town centre and shops, only 1 min to local pub / cafe ,has usual facilities but for a small payment (5 euros in 2019) when last there you can use the adjoining caravan site facilities.
Drive it easily in under 3 hours avoiding all toll roads.
Being going there for years now.

Maybe turn left, and do Belgium. Start off at Estaires, free aire. Then head for Beernem, Ghent, Bleigney Mine and Koblenz. France is great but there’s always other places, all short drives, walks and refreshments on tap .

Chateau du Grandspette near St Omer is a lovely site, great bar and restaurant. Only stayed for a couple of nights at a time on the way home, but would always aim for there now as close to Calais

There’s a site on the western edge of Wimereux. A wonderful hotel restaurant ( the Atlantic) and lots of other restaurants and bars.

This is our first night after arriving in France, and last night before coming back to Blighty. Lovely site, excellent facilities, friendly and helpful staff.

There is also Montreuil sur mer. Lovely town great walks lots of bars and bistros. Campsite on edge of town, short walk, or Aires in town.
Another vote for Montreuil

If you can walk up the big hill into the old walled city I would second this recommendation. Fantastic campsite with first class heated facilities and the old city is wonderful to visit, dine or enjoy a drink in.

Les Auberpines near Le Crotoy is a nice site, pool, bar etc and you can walk to the nature reserves or along the beach to the town.

Hi Jeff, which direction will you be travelling?

Hi we have not planned any, it’s just to get confidence using the ferry or tunnel and wrong side of the road, 🤔

If you're heading down towards Bordeaux, we like to stop at Laval ( a campsite turned aire, small charge) then onto Chef Boutonne (free aire) then onwards.....

Have you thought of going new haven to dieppe. 2 hrs from there would give a bigger area, also both quiet ports if your nervous of driving first time.

We’re ever you go it’s the journey ans adventure you will enjoy as well as the places you will come across on your travels 🚐👍

Don’t over think going to France.
The only thing you have to think about is driving on the other side of the road, when you start off just get that thought going, once you are in traffic it will be easier altho there isn’t much traffic in France outside the towns!
The Aires are a doddle, get a book such as ‘All the Aires’. Most of the Aries are free and a lot of them are in or near a town or village. No need to book you just turn up, park and enjoy, if you don’t like that Aire just move on to the next one!

Pont D’Arch near Rouen is straightforward - ACSI campsite with an acre outside, facilities very close, but for alternatives cross reference beautiful villages with an aires or campsite map - opens a new world .. https://www.francetraveltips.com/designated-les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france/

As it is your first trip over and you might like to just have a stress free trip, maybe look at Camping-Car Park. A fiver for the card, top it up and stop at one of their Aires, complete with services. Of course there are those who think this a travesty in France, but it is a great system. You can book before you go, but that costs more.
