Hi Everyone.
I have an R reg Eldiss envoy camper van.not gone away in it yet but just bought a freeview tv for it and an inverter box so it can take the voltage on the tv. Tried to tune in channels by auto tuning and keeps coming up with no signal.Anyone have any ideas what I can do please, seems local tv engineers do not know as they do not know about camper vans,This is my first camper van and due to go away in 2 weeks.

Many thanks
Mick

You need an aerial to pick up freeview. Pregerably choose a directional one with signal amplifier. Then you need to point it in the cortect direction. Some have built in lights to show the strength of the signal. If not you will need to buy a signal strength meter.

Another question about the aerial. Is it compatible with a digital signal? Given the age of the van it could be analogue only.

The aerial MUST point DIRECTLY at the local TV mast.
A little to left or right and you won't get a strong enough signal.
If you only get one or two poor channels you need to twist the aerial through 90° from flat to vertical or visa versa.

EVERY TIME you move from one place to another you have to point the aerial to the local mast again.

Pain in the arse but has to be done.

Also, make sure the signal amplifier, usually in an overhead locker or wardrobe, is switched on.

Another myth..... All aerial will get a digi signal, some better than others.
At home we have a 30 year old wire set top aerial in the bedroom.
Picks up all digi channels for our area.

If there is a signal amplifier make sure its on. Our Elddis van has got one in the wardrobe.

We see Ariels pointing in all directions. I used to point mine in the direction of the majority. Never once did I change it from Horizontal to Vertical and never had any issues (y)

I would test the tv and receiver in the house. It may have nothing to do with van as to why youre not getting a signal

Those pointing in any old direction are the ones reading a book.
They are the ones who tried to find the mast but couldn't.
They are the ones who gave up.

If you ain't pointing at the mast, you ain't watching tele......unless you're happy watching a really shite picture with more pixelated screen than picture.

The majority of masts today use the vertical signal but there are still some repeater masts using the horizontal signal.
Why do you think m/h aerial manufacturers spend extra fitting a little crank handle to change the polarity.
They would fit if it wasn't needed.
You will get some channels on the wrong polarity but you'll miss out on so many more.
Saying that, some people don't care as long as there's something that resembles a TV picture.

I was told the ariel is built in to the van and is on the roof.I automatically assumed buying a co ax cable would get a signal.I ust need to buy something else according to some of the answers on here.

did you need to buy an indoor Ariel as well as using the one built into the van?

brand new tv and works fine in the house.so not sure if I need an indoor ariel if so which would be best to buy?

so if it is not compatable with the van what tv would be best to buy?

Silly question....

Do you have an ariel?... is it connected... is it pointing in right direction?...
only have the ariel that is built in to the van,so I bought a co ax lead and thought it would work, but keeps saying no signal .

so basically get on the roof of the van and keep moving the ariel until you get a signal? I do not have an indoor ariel

You have eliminated the TV by testing in home. (y)
So now look on the roof for an actual aerial.
If one is there then next look in cupboards as almost all of these type use an amplifier. This will have aerial in from the roof and aerial out to the TV. It will be operated by 12v so should have a light on it.
A bad connection anywhere on the plugs, faulty amplifier or faulty aerial could be the reason for no signal. Start with the obvious and check all plugs are in and take aerial plugs apart to check connections are not shorting or broken.

not sure if I have an ariel amplifier.how would I find that?

My old van has a round aerial on the roof, it picks up all the free view channels as long as the signal booster fitted in a cupboard is on .the signal booster only works if the habitation electrics are on by the way. I used to use an inverter and take the house TV with me! Now I've got a 12v cello tv that just plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket.hope you get it sorted out for your trip.

No such thing as an analogue or digital aerial any tv aerial will pick both types of signal just marketing BS.
