Just got a quote for MH insurance for around 300 quid online, with assumption of 9+ years no claims discount. Then when I phone them, they said that the 9+ years NCD wouldn't apply, as it was used for my car, so I effectively have no NCD for my MH insurance. 850 quid please! Is this normal???!!!

I have separate no claims allowances for the car and van, both being 9 + years.
There are insurance companies who work on a net basis where they do not need or use any no claims allowance but they don’t let you build any up either.

I don`t think they take account of NCD but the premium seems excessive.
Was it a specialist motorhome policy ?
Try one of the specialist companies / brokers eg AIB, safaguard, Comfort, NFU frequently recommended on here.

What Figaro said.. Only try specialist insurers as listed (y)
Forget online comparisons companies.

Comfort website do an online quote, give that a try BUT with motorhomes I have found it really needs a phone call.

A few of the specialist insurance firms will mirror you’re car no claims as long as you send them proof

Insurance through CAMC wouldn't honour my 9+ year NCB from my discovery, said it had to be on a motorhome ? now that the discovery is sorn and insurance expired so I've lost that too ??????

Thats bad news HandyAndy
I am in the same position in that when we got the new van 2 years ago, Comfort gave me a decent quote for a van worth over 80K, but also said at the time, that my 14 years NCD would not have made the policy any cheaper as they quote for Net Premiums therefore not reduced by NCD.
I have been on wifes car policy as 2nd driver now for the last 5/6 years, my own car is stored and sorned, so not needed to insure it separately.
I have just realised that I have probably lost my initial 14 years NCD, plus no claims in last 5/6 years as well.
What a bummer, especially as the sorned car is a high performance classic.

Yea properly annoying, I've always had at least two policies running, one for toys and one for the daily grind. Having three policies didn't make any financial sense ?

It seems that insurers will apply a penalty if you've had an accident in any vehicle but only applies a NCD for the one in question. Also a NCD doesn't stop insurers from raising the premium at renewal.

So I went with quote from Comfort, £350. £500 cheaper than Caravan Guard. Lower excess as well.

Minimal, but learning fast.
We had a nightmare getting any insurance on our van earlier this year. (And would likely have had the same problem with any vehicle at that time). It was really easy to get an online quotation from all and sundry - specialists and the rest. When it came down to it, through a cocktail of bad motoring luck and himself having had a company car for many years, we ended up paying a ridiculous amount. I only hope it will have come down to something sensible-ish when we renew. We had to speak to about half a dozen companies and the variation between quotes was huge, mainly because of their assumptions. Moral of the story - we should have kept my 17yr old car and let him be responsible for driving it for a few years, which would have given him some motoring history and NCD to play with when the company car vanished.

DONT know if this would work but you lose all your NCB after 2 years of not having any insurance so to keep your NCB could you insure one in vehicle in different names on alternate years.
