We did it based in Sorrento where the site in town is in a situation to die for. Cheap train and ferry gets you easily to Capri, Naples, Herculaneum and Pompeii.

There is a site right outside the gates of Pompeii. But Sorrento is a city to die for.

Just looking at site prices and as usual very confusing.
Most of the sites list a price for a camper van/motorhome.. No probs.
Then they list a price for person(s) Some seem to add that price on ( which makes many silly expensive ) while other do not mention people at all..

That is the C&CC pricing structure. Not unusual.

Don't expect cheap in prime Italian locations, but what you get is priceless. Last time in Sorrento was Sept, unusually warm and sunny they said, it was perfection.

PS: Herculaneum is better than Pompeii in that you could move in to some of the villas now, and what villas they are, footballer's villas. The bed is still there in one. The shops are stocked. The takeaways ready for action.

I totally agree with @hilldweller on this one.

Camping Nube d'Argento at Sorrento is terraced, takes MHs, and is easiest approached from the coast side of the road, which means having to go past it and making a turn at a Y junction further up the road. Don't bother with Area da Sosta in Sorrento, it costs the same as the campsite and is in a built up spot. The campsite is more pleasant. Stick to the Autostrade for as long as you can when driving to Sorrento, as the last bit along busy winding roads and through a congested town can be a bit mad. Worth the effort though, and even somewhat amusing if you take your time. Not only that, but if you make an exit from the Autostrade too early into the Naples suburbs you'll wonder how you ended up in the Third World - it's a bit basic, and you have to dodge round endless dodgy geezers trying to wave your MH into their private parking areas.

Easy train access from Sorrento to Pompeii (stops outside gate), and a shortish walk from the station at Ercolano (Scavi) to Herculaneum. Allow a full day for Pompeii - Herculaneum (if you go) is a smaller site.

Tons of ferries from Sorrento port to Capri and Amalfi coast, plus local buses. For Positano I'd recommend bus in, ferry out to avoid having to hike back uphill to the bus stop. Don't even consider driving a MH along the Amalfi Coast road unless you're certified insane - there'll be no parking even if you do try. If you stop in Sorrento, don't miss out on the old port area directly below the campsite, a bit tucked away but a good choice of eateries.

Been a couple of times, and would happily go back again but we've pretty much seen all we want to see down there.

There is a site only 250 yards from the main event ( so to speak ) that is only €22 a night ( €19 with ACSI )
We are looking at starting out around June the 4th or 5th so will be out of peak season

We stayed on Camping Spartacus in Pompei on our way back from Sicily. The spaces are quite cramped and at that time we had a 8 metre caravan and a pick up truck but, as it was February and fairly quiet, we had some manoeuvring room. It was a Camping Card site so not expensive, €17 I think. It is perfectly placed for visiting Pompei which was amazing.Spent a whole day there but could have spent another as the area is vast. Free good wifi as well. The site is best described as adequate but it was the position that sold it to us, a 10 minute walk from the campsite gates.

When we stayed in Sorrento we hired a boat and sailed up the Amalfi Coast then the next day we sailed round Capri, expensive but worth it. :xThumb:

@Jaws
We were there 3 months ago John plenty of campsites right opposite the entrance and always spaces as people only stay a couple of days. We just turned up flashed the ACSi card and pitched up 17 /18 euros a night just be aware there is a railway line at the back of the campsites.

Make sure to visit Sorrento and the amazing Amalfi coast while there, we had the m/bike with us and took the back roads over the mountain to Amalfi much nicer than the tourist route. Vesuvius is a bit of a con you drive so far then the road is blocked and you have to pay a fortune to get on a poxy bus they drag it out to justify the cost, needless to say we declined. Next time we're there we'll camp the other side and ride the bike up unfortunately can't be done from the Pompei side anymore.

Too be honest Pompei is so touristy its horrible its one of those places you only visit once Valley of the Temples on Sicily is so much nicer and what Pompei should be like but the rest of the area around the bay is absolutely stunning.:xThumb:

TIP once you're down that far you need plenty of cash as most places including garages refuse credit cards and those that take cards charge a massive premium all campsites refused cards but will deal for cash.:xwink:

A few years ago we stopped at Camping Zeus, a bit tight between the trees but a reasonable priced site. It had a restaurant on site and if you fancy seeing Mount Vesuvius they did trips up via tracks using a UniMog bus, which was brilliant. Looking round the site everyone had ant powder round wheels and steadies, we soon found them in our van, little blighters were still with us when we got home:xdoh:
