Newbie since 2020 and locked down with nowhere to roam
I'm new to motorhomes and the proud new owner of a 2000 Niesmann and Bischoff Arto 59s.

I have a long list of questions regarding how things work as I'm unsure at the moment if my inexperience is the obstacle or that some things just don't work and need fixing.

My first issue is with the bathroom water pump which doesn't seem to work. I can get water to come out of the bathroom tap only if I turn the kitchen tap on but it's only a trickle. The kitchen tap seems to work ok but not with great pressure which I'm guessing is normal. Can anyone tell me where the pump is located so I can test that's working ok? And is there more than one pump? I've checked the fuses and they all seem to be fine. I have a manual for the vehicle but it's in German so struggling with it a bit.

Cheers, Hank

Hi and welcome, never owned a N&B but a few members on here have and no doubt will pop along with the answer, it might be worth paying the £15 joining fee as you only get 5 free posts

I have an Arto 69GL(2003) so I suspect the systems are similar.

The pump is a submersible one(one only) in the fresh water tank.

When you filled with water did you purge all the air from the system? The way to do that is when the pump is sufficiently under-water, open all the taps including the shower. the pump will start pushing water up the pipes and expelling the air from the taps. It will take some time for the water to fill the 10lt boiler before it reaches any tap, usually the kitchen first. When a tap shows a good flow close it and the water will move on to the next tap in sequence. As each tap shows a good flow close it. The shower will normally be the last.

This may solve your prolem. If not get back to us.

Another possible fault is that the pump has some air in it. Access the tank via the lid(ours is under the sofa - should be shown in manual) and wiggle the pump around in the water slightly inverted to ensure air escapes. Do this before the purging.

I forgot to add you should get in touch with the factory at Polch to get you an English owners' Manual, even if they charge.

N&B Manuals are comprehensive and well written, even in English. It will answer a lot of your questions - ours did.

Thanks Geoff that was most helpful.

I filled the tank and purged the system. I now have decent pressure at the kitchen sink and a pretty good flow from the shower. The basin tap is still causing a problem however.

When I bought the vehicle the basin tap was leaking so I replaced it a couple of days ago with a normal household bathroom mixer tap. I'm now thinking this was possibly not the right thing to use. Do you know if I should use a motorhome/caravan specific tap? I can see they work slightly differently as they shower water from the spout rather than pour the water out, I guess to cope with the low water pressure.

The pump is initiated by individual micro switches on each tap so it would seem you have a faulty switch on the bathroom tap. These switches are cheap and normally easy to replace.

Thanks for your reply. Are the switches usually located on the tap itself, positioned near the tap or at the pump end?

The normal household tap will have no micro-switch to signal the pump to activate.

You need to replace it with a MH/caravan tap and reconnect the micro-switch wire.

Otherwise that tap if operated alone will not be fed by pressure from the pump. If operated together with other taps that operate the pump there may be some pressure fed to it, but the answer is to replace with correct tap.

Hello and welcome from West Midlands. 👍
Once you have sorted out your plumbing most of the equipment not in the cab area will be commercially manufactured items. It can be worth a visit to the individual manufacturers website (especially armed with the model number) as the information often goes further that what is condensed into the motohome handbook. 👍

Already worth the membership fee!

It's a steep learning curve and best to ask questions from people who know rather than make expensive mistakes.

If you need to ask it then it isn't a daft question and others will also want to know :) Mind you may also get some "interesting" answers after you have a sensible one or two. That's why it's called "fun".

Oh and :WelcomeFlag:

If you like tinkering it's possible to dismantle the tap and replace the microswitch. Usually it's a broken wire, after many thousand movements of the tap on/off.

You can test the microswitch if you can get at the wire near the tap. There will be a 2-way connector. Separate the connector. You can test the microswitch with a meter set to 'Continuity', or the lowest ohms range. The resistance should be low (0.5 ohms or less) when ON, and very high (Overload or OVL) when off.

You can test the rest of the circuit by simply shorting the connector on the two wires that go to the pump from the tap. When you short it, the pump should fire up, and go off when you remove the short.

The question re the water and tap is common to most MHs.

If later you get into more particular questions relating to N&B and/or your specific model/year then joining(free) the N&B Owners UK forum is a good place, as long as you can wait a few days for replies, but they are usually very helpful and no silly/political posts. Here at : -

Easy way to test the microswitch.
Disconnect the two wires, there will be connectors a bit further down the wires, then open the tap and touch the two wires together..... Its doing the same thing as the switch.
If water flows its a faulty switch, if not its faulty/broken wiring.
