Hi,

We are in the process of buying first MH (2014 Bessacarr 6 berth) and I am not sure about what to do in terms of security.

We will store in a COSSA Gold compound near us and will mainly be in campsites I think (at least to begin with). It will be on our drive for 1-2 nights at a time whilst loading up etc.

The van has a tracker but I think it is a 5 year battery powered model so will not be working. Should I look to get a new tracker fitted and if so, which make is recommended? (I see an array of them that seem to all be expensive for yearly subscriptions).

I've also been looking at steering locks, are they recommended particularly for MHs? (It is years and years since I felt the need to use one on a car).

You don't have to have alarms and trackers and I suspect the majority of MHs don't have either. We only got something after our first trip to Italy after we had to park in a few dubious supermarkets where the only suitable spaces were a bit out of sight. The gold standard is probably the VanBitz stuff but fitting requires a trip to Taunton though you can stay in the van overnight on their campsite. I went for Out Smart the Thief stuff and it was fitted on my drive.

A steering wheel lock is a deterrent but they can be defeated. If the MH is Transit based it is a very attractive target but I suspect the one you are considering isn't on this chassis.

And the only place I've been broken into and robbed was on a campsite - but we were in a tent. :)

Just 1 point.. check with your insurance about leaving it on your drive !! If you tell them it's usually stored elsewhere they may need to know when it's at your home. Double check it will be covered or if you need to notify them each time.

Comfort allow us (i presume standard on their policies) 48 hours each end of a journey away for loading/unloading
We also found them the cheapest for us by far
They have a requirement for a tracker if vehicle is worth over 55k
