Hi Everyone.

My wife Sue and I are totally new to this motor homing thing, and bought our first motorhome last week (a 2008 Compass Avantgarde 120). Hello!

Something thats been on my mind, apart from the hundred and one things we have to learn/buy/work out by trial and error, is whats the average age of a new camper vanner? It feels quite weird doing something totally new at the age of 59 (both of us). Is this unusual, or do lots of people start when they retire? Can someone put my mind at rest?

Cheers,

Bob

Nothing unusual, we were mid 50's when we started and have never regretted our decision. We were unsure to start with but have had so much fun and travelled far more than we ever imagined we would, so don't worry just enjoy your new toy.

Welcome to the forum, I think you'll find there'a a high proportion of 'mature' people, something to do with more free time and kids making their own way in life!

bought our first van aged 49.

one or two here are considerably younger....one i believe is 20 something, but many are far older.

there is no average age so you have nothing to worry about.

58 ( me ) and 54 ( Mrs A ) and both retired early this year. We had our first van around 1987 when I was 32, so, its something everyone can do. Its just that when you retire, your no longer restricted to your annual holiday quota.
Welcome to the club.

Have to say this as I just can't resist - my whole life in the insurance industry, I always wanted to meet someone called Richard who worked for McLarens .......

(For those not of the cognoscenti - they USED to be called McLaren Dick ! I wonder why they dropped that ? :roflmto:)

I was 59 so Pete must have been 61 but then our combined mental age is probably still about 18 - so what difference does a birth certificate make?

Hi Jenny.

I used to work for McLarens, 1976 to 1984. Their full name then was McLaren Dick, Thorpe Wright and Mills! We never bothered with the last bit of the name. My best mate there was Richard Green, and we had a few Dicks as well, but that's another matter...... They were a great company in those days, really nice people and I had the best boss in the world (Alan Arthur, you may know him?). The insurance industry has changed beyond recognition since I were a lad, I hate it now. Don't get me started!

Motorhomed for almost 7 years - now going nowhere!
We bought our MH this time last year. I am 73 and husband will be 80 next Wednesday!!!

I think we miss out at the rallies because we can't stay up as late as the 50 and 60 year olds

:welcomefunster: Enjoy yourselves it's later than you think.

No need to miss out at rallies the fun goes on all day,hee hee. I had my first van when I was 18, it was a minivan with a mattress in the back and a primus stove. Now on my 14th van and am 66, you are never to young or to old to succumb to wanderlust. Welcome to the fun.:thumb::thumb:

Now then you whippersnappers. When I retired aged 60 we bought our motorhome, almost by accident, and have been loving the freedom it brings. Sure you will be doing the same. Any queries you have - just ask. :thumb:
