I have just joined, travelling in a 1988 544 Hymer currently near Valencia. Van is going great but starter motor jams occasionally anyone had that problem?

HI... / Hola....

A starter motor jamming could happen on any vehicle and any year i guess. Not just motorhome realted..
Due to the vehicles age it might be wise to start doing some research on the internet to see how easy it is to get a replacement should it fail altogether.. Might be easy to get but then it could be totally unavailable.
Worst case a specialist company might be able to re-furbish but as your in Spain that might take a little more work to track down.. Fingers crossed for ya..

Not sure how easily it can be accessed but possibly in a motorhome easier than a car.
If you can get at it removing the three (usually!) screws holding it in place will let you get to the rotating cog that engages with the flywheel. Cleaning with Plusgas (other makes are available!) Then lubricating with oil will ensure it can swivel easily on the shaft. This is usually the problem. Then relocate and tighten the three screws ensuring that the fanbelt is taught (not overtightened, though)

Guys thanks for the replies we decided to keep going & risk it. Once we are back in uk I will have access to my tools & will lubricate or replace the starter. So far it has been fine again

Last thing you should do is lubricate the starter bendix.
The oil will collect any friction material dust from the clutch disc and clog it even more.
If it needs something to clean it use a solvent or, with great care, a little petrol.
This will evaporate fully leaving the bendix free but dry.
Its usually accumulated disc dust which jams them so clean and free as much as possible then refit dry.
Modern pre-engaged starter dont seem to suffer with sticking.
