If you smelt of Elderberries it implied you were an acholic, as early medieval strong beer was flavoured with elderberries to blunt the sharp taste.
The French reported at lot of the soldiers at Agincourt 'smelt of elderberries' (Once more unto the breach dear friends....)
I'm sure the Hamster insult will also have a medieval meaning in France as well.

The UK has one of the largest global printers of money and passports, De La Rue, obviously a French name ......UK passports have been made in France for a long time.
