Just bought a new TomTom Go Basic and tried it out today. The voice instructions seem intermittent. Sometimes you get instructions, then it just goes quiet through periods when you need instructions, for instance when starting off, or turning on a roundabout. Also,the route bar seems to vanish and can't find it again, not even in route bar settings. Anyone else had this and found a solution?

Try the following.
A Soft Reset. IE turn the unit on then when it is working Hold the ON/OFF button in until you hear the Drumroll Sound then let the Button go. The unit will reboot and you can try to see if that has sorted it.
If that does not work then do a Reset Device which you will find in Settings/System. If you have some saved places in My Places on the Basic or added any 3rd Party POI files or Routes then go to the My Drive Website and log into your account there. You should, if the Basic has been logging into your account, see the aforementioned data saved there and so when you do the Reset the device will restore the Data when it logs into your account. When you do the reset it will not change the current versions of the Operating Software or Maps on the device.
You might find it useful to join the following Tomtom Forum which is largely customer based . You go to the link and log in with your Tomtom Account.

check for any software updates, there are often updates while units are sat on the store shelf.

The current Wifi versions of the Tomtom units advise you if there are any updates when you start them and have a link to enable you to see what they are and select them for updating. The one thing that you should do is do the updates one at a time rather than select them all. If there is an Operational update that must be done first and alone.

Or you could return it as faulty and get something more reliable than TomTom......like a carton of yoghurt.
