Tourism in Northumberland has been handed a boost after plans to allow motorhomes to park in car parks in three of the county's most popular coastal destinations were approved by councillors.

At Tuesday's meeting of Northumberland County Council's strategic planning committee, councillors voted to allow a one-year trial of the policy at car parks in Beadnell, Bamburgh and Amble.

The plans were voted through with no objectors, although one member - Cllr Georgina Hill - abstained from each vote.

Under the proposals, self-contained motorhomes - those with their own toilets and wash basins - will be allowed to pay an as-yet undecided fee to stay in the existing car parks.

The car parks in question are at Benthall in Beadnell next to the beach, Amble Braid Car Park and the car park opposite Bamburgh Castle.

That sound like a great move(y) thanks for the information.

Sounds good and very sensible to limit it to vans with their own facilities.

Brilliant news, depending on cost, but at least they're thinking along the right lines.

My wife gets frustrated when an erected member abstains.... :X3: :X3: :X3:

Just proves when a large group of members get together things can change for the better. I know all these places and was only too happy to have singed the petition

I think you have to book in advance but its better than nothing, also its for a year trial and price TBD.

Well I was wondering where people would go if they turned up expecting space and found the place full, also do you know if there will be and facilities for dumping particularly? we are OK for a couple of weeks but I know some folk need it every few days and wonder if it is asking for trouble if there are no facilities.

Nice to see councils responding.

Just looked up the charges on one of the car park, free after 6pm, will it still be free for cars after 6pm and Motorhomes have to pay as that would be unfair.

The carpark you looked up, did it have a 24hr ticket price??
If not, it's perhaps premature to start getting picky before we know the price and conditions?

the charges were I think 8:30 to 18:00 free at all other times.

Why would it be unfair? The proposal is to allow motorhome users to camp (despite the newspaper describing it wrongly), whereas car users will only be parking. It is perfectly reasonable for two different services to be charged at different rates.

Strange how a harmful pandemic can have beneficial outcomes as well.
When I was running my web site I corresponded on several occasions with the car park managers in Northumberland and its predecessor authorities. They were receptive to the extension of daytime parking, where possible (Hexham and Alnwick are two places I can recall off the top of my head) but the insufficient demand for overnight camping meant that it wasn't worthwhile putting the necessary resources in until demand increased.
Now that demand has increased, it is worthwhile.

Nothing has been officially announced about bookings or price, the Amble car park mentioned is free at the moment.
I will update the information once it is officially announced.

No, camping is getting awnings tables & chairs out, parking is staying contained within your vehicle, something UK councils don't appear to understand.

Yes if you are allowed to camp, i.e. put out tables chairs and BBQs etc. Also if they are providing water and waste facilities, but I expect not for a one year trial.

This was on Campra yesterday. Signs will say overnight camping which is wrong and should say overnight sleeping in motorhomes/campers. They also confirmed £15 a night with no services which seems to be CL prices.

Redcar & Cleveland are offering overnight camping with no facilities for £15 (8pm to 8am). I wouldn't pay that.

Gordon
I think £15 for 24hours might just be tolerable with some services, but maybe not Redcar;)

15 quid a night for a car park that's a joke & if cars are free it really is taking the pee.

That might be your preferred definition, Lenny, but councils gave to work with the definition in law. Overnighting is habitation, not simply parking :)

See above :-)

I thought that was still only under consideration. There's nothing on the web site and I haven't seen any confirmation in the local press.

About time they woke up then, what's the difference between someone sleeping in a motorhome or sitting in a car all night. Stupid antiquated laws need sorting.

£15 per night just to use a bit of tarmac that is there anyway without water & waste provision is a bit cheeky. £10 for 6pm to 10am I could accept but at that price I'll find a CL which has better provision and probably EHU as well for the price being quoted. Is it a rather "cunning plan" to prove 'no demand' than a realistic trial?

The Banburgh car park in Summer is packed full every day so I wonder if there will be a separate area? Otherwise it will be a late night by the time you get in. Ther are coach spaces and they generally leave a bit earlier in the day. A good idea but might be a bit of an issue actually getting in. There is a field up the road you can stay in for £10 a night with great views of Budle bay, and waste dumping facilities.
