Just been advised that the delivery of my new Autotrail has been delayed by at least 4 weeks!

Is anyone else in a similar situation?

The problem seems to be it's a seller's market at the moment and there's not a lot the customer can do. In a buyer's market it's easy to switch to another dealer but currently that's Impossible.

Ordered 2 nd Jan was due ‘June’ and last week told it’ll be 1st week July now…. I’m afraid it is how it is but I know some have been hit with chronic delays so counting blessings and a week or two is ok. Dvla on the other hand for getting LGV provisional…. Don’t even go there !!!

What have you ordered?

Even bog standard Transits are delayed.
Mate bought a new one, for delivery 1st of May.
Latest is "maybe end of August"

The problem apparently is the car parks where they offload the vehicles from the ships are full and no one is buying Transits.
So until enough stock is sold, and the car park is emptied, and enough room is created for a ship load to be landed

We were told our new Niesmann would be here in November but I had some more paperwork through at the end of last week and it stated estimated deliver date 27 Jan 2022😩 it’s no big deal to us as we don’t go away in the winter but it had bet to be here by the end of Feb.
good luck with your new van, Enjoy.

Drove past Bristol on the M5 recently and there must have been well over a thousand new vehicles parked there. Didn't appear to be any vacant spaces so no room to off-load more vehicles from a ship.

Bürstner … I’m told they’ve been able to limit delays (not sure how) and a usually efficient in recouping costs from dealers unlike adria what we had previously. Our dealer collects his own vehicles rather than intermediary company also

Hmmm local Ford guy suggests those that ordered before Covid are only just seeing their delayed vans. Any new cans are now well into next year, post Covid as the shut downs in various territories staggered creating 1 huge production stoppage. The ports always look rammed … especially summer apparently but each vehicles waiting ‘processesing’ and an eager buyer who ordered a while ago.
Also a friends fleet can’t be replaced as you literally can’t get hold of vans…

Specialist Services at the Stratford show said Merc's have closed all ordering down, and the three fiats he had ordered last year won't be here until Nov at the earliest, so he's cancelled them. He's not to concerned as he's he selling every roof top tent he can make.

My neighbour took his Transit panel van to Arnold Clark last year to ask about a trade in, they offered him £9k against a new van. Circumstances changed and he didn't go ahead with the deal. He took it back again last month and was offered £16k ! He traded it in and got his new Transit more or less straight away ?

GHN. If you have to wait another four weeks, can I suggest you get the dealer to register it as soon as he has the vin number. DVLA are taking at least six/eight weeks to register new vans.

Ours is stuck in the dealers yard, with all the extras fitted ready to go BUT the DVLA are taking ages to register it.

To be honest I don't think delays in delivery of new motorhomes is a new thing (though maybe a bit worse than before) I remember when we got ours new back in 2017 we had a 5 week delay on the original date given which in itself was some 8 months after we placed our order, I also recall we got of quite lightly at the time compared to some with many then waiting 12 months plus from time of order and then getting extensions to the original date in months rather than weeks on top.

Who told you that no-one is buying Transits ???
They are all sold
If you want a NewTransit van today, order it for Q1 2022 if you are lucky
Factory closed for 2-3 weeks- component shortage
I have just sold 2 x 1 year old Transits for more than I paid new for them

Our new motorhome build was supposed to be on 17th May got told by the dealership that Bailey are 6 weeks behind schedule so I can realistically put another 3 weeks on top of that too. But hey ho life’s to short to scream and shout, hopefully everyone will be sorted rather than later 😊. Keep smiling and the whole world smiles with you.

Massive shortage of vans across all brands. There’s a chip shortage affecting all vehicles and manufacturers are prioritising cars over commercials and once you add in delays due to COVID such as factory shutdowns and having to social distance in manufacturing plants meaning less vehicles are produced daily, it’s inevitable that motorhome deliveries will be pushed back and back and back........

it does mean that used prices are stiffening up quite handsomely for virtually any vehicle. On WBAC, my trusty 64 plate Volvo has increased value by about a grand since the beginning of the year as demand plus shortages are fuelling increased prices.

Transits ? They are exiting Southampton docks by the dozen on transport , let me assure you transits are being sold .

Colyboy, I guess it must depend on the dealer on this. Our van was registered on line by Wildax on the day we picked it up, took 6 weeks for Dvla to issue the V5, no problem insuring it etc and we just got on with using it. I was given details of registration etc.

Agreed, however until they clear enough space for the April-May backlog of deliveries my mate is not getting his new van anytime soon.

The problem for him (and others) will be if they have not arrived by October, which is when the ULEZ comes into effect in London, and hundreds of thousands of Diesel vans and cars will be banned.

(We have to sell our perfectly good Citroen, with 60K miles on the clock, as it's not ULEZ compliant)

Same as ours, But for this to happen the dealer needs to be registered to do online registrations

There's a worldwide semiconductor shortage (computer chips) which has hit the automotive industry particularly hard. I bought and paid for a VW Crafter last October, no sign of it yet. Every manufacturer is have to scale back or stop production. It's not just autos, I know of IT projects that are on hold because they can't get the hardware.

Dealers are still misleading customers, a dealer told me last weekend that I could put a deposit on a german built van due mid july that was scheduled to go into production next thursday, I mentioned delays and he just waffled they never get delays........🤔

Recently got offered good money for my van however getting a replacement is going to be next year so waiting for next year for things to calm down a bit. We bought our 1st new van in 2008 and despite the promises in Feb of that year (NEC) of early to mid May delivery it was D Day 6th June when we finally got it. On top of this because we bought well out of area they promised to deliver at the show. Fast forward to June and because the financial crash had started and diesel prices shot up (as far as 138p ltr) they renaged on the the delivery and we had to collect, and travel all the way from Yorkshire right down South on train, the day before due to sail to Belgium. Anyway happy ending as we managed to put sailing back a day and we had good drive back, the weather was great and it was the then new 3ltr Comfomatic so it ate the miles back to home. Just keep your fingers crossed it isnt too long till you get it.

Thanks for your many interesting replies. There appear to be many reasons or excuses why delivery dates are not being met. I just find it so annoying that dealer's are not being realistic with delivery dates. It's a shame that consumer law doesn't enable a penalty clause to be incorporated into a contract for late delivery - that would shake the supply chain into action.

Most of my working life has been about setting and working to deadlines. From the 3 day week in the 70's, through strikes and shortages (due to foreign policy) and straightforward mismanagement, I've always strived and have generally succeeded in keeping the customer happy. What's changed - has life become too easy for people nowadays?

Sorry about my rant - I shall just have to follow some advice from your posts and calm down, get used to changing my plans and keep smiling.😊😊

I too work to deadlines but I think dealers at held to ransom as we are. I’m sure they would want nothing more than a deadline met and happy customers. I’d imagine.. huge fit outs lo very complex vehicles and suppliers of so many parts. Then all the QA in between so many stages.
I brought German to minimise this and even we’ve been warned 1-2 weeks delay

best just relaxing and trying to keep occupied, that’s been my way…. Kid waiting for Christmas 🤣

I only hope that when our new van comes at the start of next year the quality is what it should be for a 140k van and corners haven’t been cut by using cheaper components because that’s all they can get.

I read recently that Fiat are waiting for cabs following lockdown I believe. This would affect a large number of manufacturers deadlines. (RussM March)

With respect, delays got absolutely nowt to do with German or British or wherever
its a world supply issue

its a world component issue.

I agree, the challenges have appeared more pronounced and frustrating in an “industry” where the customer comes a long way down the pecking order
Some suppliers of just services ( ie they MAKE absolutely nowt) have fully “embraced” furlough and shirking from home with open arms, and blame their deficiencies on Covid too readily
( I give DVLA as an example, but lots of other sectors are as bad)
