Hi all. Been looking at new Gas BBQ's recently and have noted that some I have been looking at say they are not to be connected to on board/installed gas bottles. Can anyone who knows about these things suggest why this would be please? I don't want to carry another bottle just for the BBQ as we have Gaslow installed.
Many thanks

Those probably have in built in regulator.
They usually do the same models without the reg built in.

Yeah, not sure really, probably as said about the "extra" regulator?
Personally I went for a weber q1200 and converted it for use with either standalone cylinder or via the motorhome external gas point.

Check out the specifications of any BBQ you are thinking of buying and compare to your MoHos onboard supply. Many BBQs are designed to operate on a propane bottle at 37mb whereas the MoHo might have a 30mb regulator fitted - the Adria we have on order certainly does. The Napoleon TravelQ 285 I recently purchased is available for the U.K. market as a 30mb model. Also be aware that the maximum length of connection hose advised by manufacturers is usually 1.5m.

I have a 1.5m hose fitted and a spare 1.5m as often I want to put the bbq in a position that 1.5m does not allow.
Had no issues whatsoever in doing.

correct 37 mb and ours is 30 and thanks. I have been using a BBQ connected to the onboard for 7 years and just wanted to understand why the manufacturers say dont do it in case I had just been lucky all this time.

I suspect it’s to do with certain BBQs having a combined regulator/operating valve built in as Phill D mentioned at post #2 above - the Charbroil X200 being one of them. They would only be suitable to connect to a patio gas bottle or screw in cartridge type supply as you wouldn’t be able to run two regulators in series.

I also think the 1.5m maximum recommended hose length is to avoid any reduction in performance down to pressure loss, albeit slight and probably not too much of an issue if extended within reason. I was mainly concerned about how much loss is experienced by running a 37mb BBQ on the MoHos 30mb supply though, and that’s why I looked for a BBQ specifically rated for it.

I have a 4 meter hose it’s nothing to do with reduction in pressure as it’s not like electric

That’s really like comparing apples to oranges then!

All gas installations suffer from pressure loss due to frictional resistance from the pipe work and fittings that the gas passes through. Which is why it’s important that, in the case of a domestic system, it’s correctly designed to only give a maximum drop in working pressure of 1mb from natural gas or 2mb for lpg.

Obviously with the size of a MoHo system being so much smaller it’s highly unlikely the installed pipe work and appliances would have any similar issues, but other than avoiding a trip hazard, why would some BBQ manufacturers set a maximum length of 8mm flexible hose at 1.5m? Of course the BBQ will work on longer lengths, and possibly just as efficiently, but my main point was to highlight using an appliance rated for 37mb propane on the now standard 30mb in MoHos - that’s a 19% reduction in the rated supply pressure!

My portable camping gaz bbq runs ok with a bottle fitted regulator and 7m rubber hose, can’t say we’ve noticed any difference in performance between the 1m or long hose.
