Would it be worthwhile having a sub forum for visited and recommended aires/stellplatze etc?

So we can build up a map of above-average places we have personally visited as an addendum to "all the aires" etc.

I'll kick off with:

Phoenix Stellplatz bad windsheim. This is a large aire by a huge wellness centre. The aires itself has 108 places looking out to a pleasant field/lake. It's around 15euro with loos and leccy. The office is open around 8-10am and 4-5pm (IIRC). May be worth booking a place if travelling high season. - +49 9841 685087
Quiet & secure overnight.

It's a useful distance half way down Germany.

The wellness centre is very german, with hot salt pools and a decent sauna/spa complex (german rooms apply)

Bad Windsheim is a pleasant small town which looked like the child catcher from Chitty was about to emerge.

a second one if I may:

Aires de camping Mareuil sur Ay, Champagne.

Relais Nautique [havengebouw]
Place du Grand Jard, 51160 Mareuil sur Ay,Champagne Ardenne [08-10-51-52] / France

Tight fit between the trees, or along side canal. In the middle of champagne country.
One clean loo available.
Nice cycling along canal
open all year and free.

I put some (admittedly non knowledgable) thought into this some time ago
I thought that google maps could be used by having a spurious email address eg motorhomefunaires@gmail.com with a password of equal simplicity that all members could then access.
You can go to my maps and add the aires on the aires map, add places of interest eg oradour on another map and great dining out restaurants on another etc. and reviews come from there which should be more trusted as a review.

Unfortunately access would be public in that members may tell their non member friends (if they have any) how to access.

I have no doubts there are better ways of doing it but a thread of aires isnt the way forward i would think.

Here you go we can give this a try. I have added an Aires section to the reviews.

First you upload details of the aire YOU ARE NOT REVIEWING IT AT THIS STAGE just uploading the details to our database. Once done choose the bottom option. Save and review and you can leave your thoughts on the aire.

This way others will be able to leave reviews and we should build up a map of aires. Upload a few and we'll see how it goes (y)

I think you are right in that a map will be essential and maybe ratings for cost, location etc

Does it have to be only for aires?

Why not for all to include free stops, campsites, car parks etc etc in all countries

Great idea - very useful to us newbie campers too as finding decent places to stop makes a huge difference, especially to how the wife takes to travelling around Europe!

Thanks Jim. Be great to have recommendations on great places to stay. I know there are lots of resources to find aires, stopovers etc but it takes some trawling through to find the golden nuggets sometimes.....recommendations are subjective though. Perhaps people could put something on the review about why it is above average in their opinion? Could be the great view, a lovely town or whatever....or am I making it too complicated?

I do hope this works, however, keeping it exclusive should be the main criteria, sadly so many people feel the need to “ share” and the so called “Chestnuts” could so quickly be lost to S4S etc.

I apologize if this is out of order Jim, but you might consider placing an appeal on the
Category for Funsters not to share.

@Jim. just looked and am not getting 'add new' on windows and android.
can you add UK aires.
map access ideal but dont confuse it with too much detail. just allow basic info in the popup like cost, service, carpark,

I think its a good idea though logistically it could become more trouble than its worth (for admin)

I like to search by area so I can plan in advance - which is why I like all the aires for planning. so, when I have decided where we are going and which route, I start looking along the route and plan that way. I am happy to add a few recommended stops and contribute and help if I can. recommendations from funsters is better than reading a general description in books etc

Thanks for your hard work. My thoughts were: not to repeat “all the Aires” but to have maybe 10-20 max in each country which a funster has visited and rates highly.
I appreciate it’s subjective and, to quote the Eagles “call someplace paradise and you kiss it goodbye”.

Looks just the job could even combine the two one colour pins for dealers another for aires that are free and another for paid places to stay etc.
That sounds like the one I use.

How about now?

Because I value personal recommendations. Not all aires are equal.

So what elements make a good aire?

1, Location - close to a city centre/beach/chateau

2, Pleasant space to be - nice views, lots of room

3, Facilities - services, toilets wifi ehu

4, Free - this seems to be numero uno for a lot of posters on here.

@Jim just tried adding and reviewing which seemed to have worked (Anthy sur leman). Got a photo on but within the review the photos have to be less than 1mb so i have a learning to exercise as to how to decrease the size, but i couldnt work out how to add to a map. Cheers

You know one when you get there!

I like:
Quiet
toilet
near something interesting
easy to access in A class
don't mind a few euros - many aires are (IMO) preferable to campsites.

I like Aires that are clean, tidy, spacious, close to a beach and where you can get chairs out to sit outside.

I don’t mind paying a reasonable fee.

Well one has been uploaded so it looks like its working OK yy

I hate reviews which are "good because the weather was nice" ;)
