Has anyone fitted a new engine rather than buy a different motor home.
Is it feasible to do this? Where can you buy a quality engine at a reasonable price?
We have spent a lot of money on adaptations to our van and therefore would rather keep it with a new engine rather than have to buy a new moho with all the problems of making it suitable for my disabled wife. Thanks for any answers.

many many years! since I was a kid
rather than buy a new engine, it would be better and cheaper to have the original one reconditioned. There are companies specialise in doing these refurbishments and turn out guaranteed engines better than new. The gearbox is another thing you may consider having refurbished at some point, remember though that the builders/couriers van cousins of our motorhomes often do 500,000 plus miles on the original engine with proper maintenance

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Engine changes are easy enough to do, the link n here to @Willbills upgrade takes it to a new level & it has to be said his upgrade is pretty serious stuff that'd make most home mechanics run a mile, but if its a simple replacement that's needed go for it.

Good luck & please keep us posted on whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for the posts so far. I have the 2.8 hdi pug engine with 101,000 miles, there's nothing wrong with the existing engine, I just have a slight concern as to the future and also looking at the economics of the options available.

It's barely run in yet.

Three years and counting, 30 years a tent tower.
Can't think of any reason to consider changing the engine if the old one is going ok.
I've been looking into this as RH is a Euro 3 MB engine which does restrict access to some places with the growing number of Umwalt zones etc in Germany. I'd ideally like to upgrade to Euro 5 or 6 for some future proofing but so far haven't found anyine who can tell me whether its feasible

Can't remember ;)
I may be wrong but I don't think fitting a newer euro 6 engine would qualify your vehicle to become euro 6 -it would remain what it was designated when made --If nothing wrong with engine leave well alone -the 3 litres run forever if maintained ;)

upgrading to a euro 5 or 6 engine would be a massive job including changing the engine and all sensors, wiring and ecu's. I know of nobody that would even attempt it. would cost £10k plus i reckon to do the job right. a week or 2 labour plus a very long list of parts to do it correctly

maybe but depends how you source the engine and parts. if i was looking to do such a swap out, i would buy a written off vehicle at auction, being careful it was still a runner. probably rear end damage only, that way you have absolutely everything to hand to swap over

The engine / running gear has been designed to be driven to within an inch of it's life by an ape. So long as it's correctly serviced, you've got many more trips left in that youngster (y)
