Is this a good idea or a step too far - pop top on coachbuilt prototype https://innovation.buerstner.com/gb/en

There was a thread about it last year with various 'comments', I can't remember what the consensus was though! :giggle:

Does the raised roof have any wind limitations?

Bongos had electric ones in 1994...

Never had/used a pop top so maybe owners on here can advise? Would have thought it's for relatively fair weather camping though.

It looks to be the only bed unless the dinette converts so may not be suitable for the UK for fair weather camping!

Blimey, they already leak at certain joints on vans and now this. Good to see that the opening is facing INTO the wind when driving, so shouldn’t allow any ingress of wind, noise or water.

Not for me thanks chef…

It does look complicated & expensive if anything goes wrong - might be ok under warranty but still downtime for parts as would be somewhat specialist.

We camped in a valley in Norway one time. Went to bed and it was beautifully still. Wind picked up in the night and began to blow a gale. We were side on to the wind and it really felt as if the wind could blow the roof off. Our daughter was fast asleep in the pop top and didn't like being woken to move down to our bed so we could put the roof down. I suspect it was blowing about 40- 50
mph although I didn't have my anemometer.

So in short, there are limits
I note that it appears to be insulated. We added a sliver screen type wrap around in cold weather which made a big difference.

Well marketed video and I do love the colour of the seats.

Wonder how it would cope when it rains in the middle of the night and you need to move in the morning. Can’t be good to put it away wet and would that then introduce moisture in the van.

I had a Trigano pop-top caravan. Out of only 5 new caravans we had had it was the only one to not have a major repair within the 1st year. No problems with leaks either. We used it all year round, no problem.

Security put me off pop tops, a friend was parked at a proper campsite, I think Chartres, a thief went around slitting tents and pop tops, theirs too, did a large proportion of the whole site. One quick slice, grab and depart. He had climbed up on the bonnet, sliced straight across, and all their goodies were in the loft. The idea of a knife slashing around while we're asleep really freaked me. A few months later at the same site, my front opening pop top stuck when we were just off to the ferry. The auto top had crossed its legs, as it were. The breakdown company asked could I start the engine? Yes. Could I put it in gear? Yes! Then you are not broken down, are you? I said if I try to drive home with top up it'd be dangerous and I'd be stopped by the police. Find a garage was their reply.

So no more pop tops for me!!

Just another place for a possible leak.
