What do you always carry but never use? Sounds like a riddle.

We always have ramps in the van but I cannot recall the last time they were used.

How about you?

French dictionary.

There’s an app for that. And because it says words out loud for you to listen to and practice you actually be saying it right and be understood.

It was perfect while I was interrailing around Italy. Although we stayed in five cities I only came across one waiter who didn’t speak English.

Other European countries put us to shame with their multi-linguistic skills.

I don't think that will apply to Chris, it was a tongue in cheek reply.... He detests France with a passion.

I try to avoid France if I can, but if not you can just speak English to them in a French accent.

They pick up the gist eventually

After over 35 years and 13 vans we now carry very little. In our early years we loaded the vans with every toy but now we realise most of it was either never used or seldom needed. There's so much kit available now we would all need an HGV to carry it.
A local motorhomer went from a 33 foot RV down to a panel van last year. He now has more space in his van than he had in his big RV. The more space we have the more we appear to carry.

Spare wheel although we have come close to needing it a couple of times.

Electric bits and bobs (kettle, toaster, hob) which we always carry now despite not using them for many, many years - this is due to us having an issue with out gas system in the past and if we hadn't had electric appliances we'd have been well stuffed, they take up a void that would not be used otherwise so don't eat into our valuable storage space.

Know exactly where you are coming from, I have exactly the same problem when visiting my grand mother in South Wales. 😉

As far as seldom used... For us it’s the emergency pot noodle ration. Like the cockroach of the “food” world. It’s very lurking presence in the store cupboard is enough to make one get out and get a proper feed at all costs

We used to carry levelling ramps, but they take up so much room in a PVC that we leave them out now unless we are going to a music festival (fat chance this year) where you don't usually get a choice of pitch and the terrain can be a bit dodgy to say the least.

Things we do take and rarely use: fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, spare bulbs/fuses, soldering iron, gaffer tape.

Spare wheel is vital, breakdown won't help you if you have a flat if you havnt got a spare wheel.
True, after we downsized to the 530 it was a bit of a struggle to get the spare in. The van only came with the cylinder of gunk and a pump so space was a premium. After getting a spare off Fleabay I set about getting it in as I would never travel without one.
Can you imagine Friday night on the M25 pouring down with rain on the way to the Chunnel. I couldn’t look the AA guy in the eye and say sheepishly “I haven’t got a spare” :tmi::Eeek:

In all my recent vans I have carried a spare wheel. Takes up valuable space and I have never needed it. Will I leave it behind, no chance. :clap2:
It’s True you do not need a spare wheel.....the naysayers will say you do but it’s just dead weight.

Yes they will manufactures are increasingly not supplying vans with spare wheels. Just check out AA RAC and green flag they are all kitted out and prepared for vehicles without a spare wheel. It’s an urban myth they won’t help.

Ok you are right but it seems to be a right old game.

I’m sure the AA and others will be used to people having no spare wheel nowadays. Most new cars don’t have one , just a can of stuff or run flat tyres . I know our vans aren’t cars but they need to send out a specialist truck anyway if you need real help .

Coolcats. Sorry I missed your post as I was typing mine .😀

Loads of tools but they are insurance. Washing machine doesn't get used much now as we have more room for more clothes in this van. Spare cassette hardly ever gets used but when you need it, it's invaluable.

Neither our Hymer or my VW Transporter have a spare these are globally supplied vehicles. Manufactures are moving away from supplying spare wheels. Having had a Plether of low slung cars and still have one which have specialist tyres and no spare and experienced calling no out breakdown service it does depend on your attitude. Yes it does take time for the recovery services to help but in my experience they always try their best, one car had to be taken back to the factory for a new tyre. As far as Vans are concerned it is more straight forward issue.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, thats my excuse for the countless tons of crap I take with me
