We are still very new to campervan life... we are thinking of going to a rally is there somewhere on here with a calendar of what is happening next year?

How do we join one... etc etc

Just thinking about planning our next adventures :)

Click on the Rallies link on the dark blue menu, check the various dates and open the one that interests you then follow the link to the thread. Simples. (y)

Edit: On the Rally calendar along the top line a small arrow will open a bigger menu with links to all scheduled rallies.

Hello, Chester is a very good meet, we have been about three times its a Camperfest and is a massive food festival which you have entry to and when you are foodied out its only five minutes from the city centre as you are parked on the racecourse .

Motorhomed for almost 7 years - now going nowhere!
Hello @arto stu There are the big rallies organised by Warners and others at Peterborough, Newark, Malvern etc. where you might have to book direct but you join as a member of Motorhome Fun and get a discount. You are then parked with other Funsters you may have 'met' on line. You can ask for a Funster badge when you fill in Jim's form that confirms your booking.

The smaller rallies give you a better opportunity of meeting other Funsters but can fill up quickly as numbers can be limited.

We started by going to the big Motorhome Show rallies where entertainment is provided and enjoyed the Chester Food Festival at Easter where it's just a short walk to the city and Stratford likewise and at other rallies the organisers sometimes run a bus service to the city.

Our first experience was at the Peterborough show, I think it’s a good way to get to know some people with lots else going on too should you want to do something else.

The rally’s are great, I was apprehensive but you really can join in as much or as little as you want and nobody will judge you.

But don’t expect to sit in your van and have people coming to invite you to things, the whole point is that if you’re in your van keeping yourself to yourself people will respect that you want to be left alone and will do so - they’re not being stand offish, just respecting your space.

Looking forward now to 3 rd Peterborough rally as soon as booking opens on 27th, and to the rally in Dumfries in June

As a newcomer myself, I have attend 2 events, the retro festival at Newbury, not far from you, which was great but you do not get to talk for long as probably to many people and to much to do. Then I attended the Pembury halloween rally, well i gather this more like a motorhome fun rally, got to meet several people so would recognise them again, heard the karioki etc etc, saw how much men could drink but that the ladies could drink more, apparently drinking Phils paint stripper as it had some alcohol content. I am going to retro festivals again, but they do say Chester is good. Get your name down as they do appear to sell out fast for the smaller events.

We choose them at places we wanted to visit. We wanted to go up to Scotland for a tour so chose one at the Falkirk Wheel. We wanted to visit Liverpool so chose one at Southport. Rally's also tend to have cheaper and more convenient locations than are normally available.
Enjoy.

Where to begin? Without knowing your circumstances it has to be general.

Children/grandchildren - all venues are suitable, many have a large enough area nearby where they can play without annoying those near you by banging a ball on your home.

Dogs - lots take dogs, there is usually a choice of dog walks. There are a few exceptions when out of the funster area, but very few, e.g. the actual food and drink festival area at Chester.

Evening entertainment - at most venues Fun has its own or a provided marquee, various events but many have the fun step band playing, sometimes karaoke, quiz’s, you name it, it’s on. Warner’s show rally’s usually have free entertainment apart from Saturday night top name from yesteryear performers - still good value.

Daytime, it depends on the venue and facilities which vary at each venue. Funsters have coffee mornings, bacon butties on Sunday mornings and a few other daytime join in events, especially for new members. As Carol said, Chester is very good as a little under ten minutes walk and you are in the centre, you name it, it has it. Warner’s usually run buses into centres, e.g. Lincoln, but at others there will be a public service very close by e.g. Norfolk Show Ground.

Hook ups - a few venues provide these, and your own generators are allowed at some but with usage restrictions - check individual events.

All have fresh water and chemical toilet disposal. Word of warning on water, on the first day with lots filling up pressure can below on some sites and it can take forever, not too bad if thecweather is fine and you can chat to the others in the queue, but not good in the rain. So, if you can arrive with as much fresh water as you can carry.

Soggy ground - be prepared if the weather isn’t kind for heavily used areas to be a bit soggy. Site managers do put extra straw down, but if you are a last minute person when leaving and have timed down to that last minute an important appointment five hours away, then you will have a problem if it’s a tow off. Some can manage to get off on there own, many then get stuck. Wait for the tractor, they have it off to a fine art, but make sure you know where your front towing eye is and you can get it in. You cannot forecast this, Chester last year was perfectly dry despite a lot of over winter rain.

Finally, if you cannot get to somewhere you have booked, please try to let the Rally Marshall’s know.
