I'm a newbie
I would like to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle on my way through to Kaiserwinkle. Is it possible to take and park my 6.4mt Mo Ho at this castle

There is a large p&d carpark at the bottom which will accommodate you easily.
You then get the shuttle up to the castle after getting tickets at the office.
Or walk up the hill if your energetic

Good move. It's mind blowing and of course the Germans cater for all comers, a small MH will be no problem.

There is also an Aire (paid) in the town, we walked up to it if you are reasonable fit, tried to take the scooter first but the local shuttle service bods weren’t happy so walked instead, as it’s a folly there isn’t much to see inside,

Thank you, anything else in this area worth seeing?

we went earlier this year and arrived about 5pm and were driving against a continuous stream of cars and tourist coaches leaving the site. The last bus up from carpark is at 5.30pm. The famous bridge up above the castle has a queuing system in the day but we were able to move around easily once we had got our breath back from walking up from the carpark !
We were then too late to go inside the castle, so if you do want to go inside, I would recommend doing as we did at Ludwigs other famous castle Herringinsel, and stay overnight nearby and get there to be the first trip of the day before the coaches.
We stayed on the stellplatz in Füssen. Just a carpark but had facilities.

Füssen is worth a visit.

I can send you a link to a file in Dropbox that I made of our trip to Bavaria if you pm me with email address. It’s too large for me to email directly.

the inside is amazing... dont know what folly there that does not have much too see.

Has anyone seen the short film show on the way out near the cafe and souvenir shop? It gives a detailed view in 3D what he had planned to finish it, the finished castle would have been even more impressive! Well a worth a look?

from memory you need to find the car park that takes motorhomes, all well signposted.. no issues re length.
however ..... we parked nose in , and why not? Nope ....told by attendant to reverse in, which i did.

guess its to reduce chances of accidents , or slow getaways when leaving .

This video should interest you. It features a trip from Lindau to Berchtesgaden. It includes Neuschwanstein and other things in the area.

There is a walk down the gorge from the castle that's much nicer than the route up and much quieter but a bit rough
Wasn't that impressed with the inside but outside worth the effort
We camped at a site the other side of Fussen on main lake which was nice but a bit steep and cycled to the castle
Fussen is a nice town for a visit

We've made three attempts to visit - the first two we literally couldn't get near it. The last we went early and parked up easily - but there were no timed tickets available for several hours, too long to leave the dog on his own in the heat we were "enjoying". But we'll have another go next time we're that way.

Incidentally the first time we were following the Romantic Road which is worth a week on it's own. From there we used the Alpenstrasse, which crosses the R/R near Fussen, then headed north through the Black Forest following again a marked tourist route (look out for the largest cuckoo clock in the world!)

Whatever you do, don’t try to go there on a bank holiday. This was the queue for the car parks last Easter

We just drove song access road for a photo ? ... place was hoaching.

We did visit Schloss Linderhoff which we liked very much.

Agree that the Alpenstrasse is a must ... Oberammergau, Bad Tolz, Ramsau, Chiemsee all worth a visit

You are a hard man to please. The place virtually bankrupted his country and possible cost him his life.
Must be a German trait..... He might have been the first but he wasn't the last.

Ludwig had 3 castles built, https://www.european-traveler.com/germany/mad-king-ludwigs-fantasy-castles-near-munich-in-germany/ and its about 40 euros entry for all 3 and you queue jump.
We thought that was terrific value and started at the Chiemsee one that you have to take a boat to but the aire at the bottom of the lake was only only 6 euros and hits our "Will return" standard.
Quite a walk from the boat drop off to the castle but the hall of mirrors here is based upon Versailles famous room.
We then went to the small white one which was the best interior, in our opinion, but quite small.
Then we hit Neuschwanstein and were completely bored with exactly the same chat and herding through rooms like going through a sheep dip. An interesting table but fantastic views.
I think it is after you do it (like Versailles) that you realise it was a complete waste of money going into them as the exterior (which is free) is far superior.
Unfortunately, to find this out, you have to pay the money to go in.
The Alpinestabbe is far superior to the Romantic Road in our opinion as well. (I accept others will disagree)

For Chiemsee, we took the first boat out from Prien and arrived at the castle just as it was opening for the day. We were on our own with the tour guide.
When we came out, they had switched on the fountains and the first of the coach parties were streaming in.

We went about 3 years ago. Fairly quiet , easy parking for the 7m van. The ticketing system for visiting was a pain but otherwise worth every euro. Hohenschangau is definitely worth a look. Ironic to thing that the loony spent all his counties money on castles ,only to end face down in a lake , but now the castles are a huge source of revenue. Mind you, if I had my hands on the treasury at 18 then the loot would have disappeared fairly rapidly. Women and motorbikes in my case.

Thanks again for your great replies, I may have to re-think my route now and allow more time for sightseeing

We have been there a few times over the years, early on backpacking as a newly married couple in the 70s. Neuschwanstein is quite something seen first thing appearing out of the morning mists drifting up from the lake. Last time we went in March, cold but clear and no crowds. Several campsites around the lake, and there is a bus service up the hill, there is an aire also. Lake is great for cycling, canoeing, walking etc etc etc. Mad King Ludwig would have been a set designer in Hollywood in a later age, he certainly new how to stage a castle! Just remember when seeing it, it was all basically a setting for his friend Wagner's operas, it isn't really a castle

The Alpenstrasse and Romantic Road have been mentioned a couple of times and I have an idea which ones they are but can you say what town / village they start and finish at, That would be a great help. Thanks

east/west for alpine Straße ,Constance-Bertchesgarten

Roughly North south romanticstrasse Würzburg to Füssen
