On and off for many years.
Because of all the stress we are under and because we have rarely left the house since March we want to have a few days away in October once hospital appointments should be over.

We would like to be within about 50 miles of Hartlepool because of any emergency trips to my parents.

Anyone got their favourite sites / places they like to stay? Quiet and peaceful with cycling if possible.

Westfield paddock Seahouses. Adults only. Half hour walk along quiet road to seahouses. Lots of quiet country lanes and you can cycle into Bamburge thats got a couple of pubs ans cafe's. And the castle to go around. And Grace Darling museum. Plus boats to farne islands.

We stayed on a new cl at a fishing lakes place near Alnwick last week for 2 nights then 2 nights near Durham and just over the border to St Abbs for a couple of nights.

There's the popular 'Sea-to-Sea' cycle route between Whitehaven/Workington and Sunderland/Tynmouth. Obviously not the whole route, but the eastern bit nearer the North Sea is supposed to be fairly flat ex-railway track routes.

The C&MHC site at Old Hartley, Whitley Bay, would give good access to that cycle route, and it is flat as it follows the Tyne for about 15 miles inland

Have a look at the Haven thread (can't remember the title): sites near Scarboro'/Bridlington for approx £10 pn.

Scarborough / Brid a bit too far away - plus we had a really really bad experience there a few years back and said we would never return.

That is one of our "afternoon out" places - not Westfield Paddock but Seahouses / Bamburgh area.

I am now thinking that Wooler might be an idea - very close to here but there is an old railway line that I have always fancied exploring. I'd need to look on a map to see if it goes to Alnwick and if it is for cycles or pedestrians only :)

Masman The Wino Northumberland is on the list as even though it is on our doorstep and we spent a lot of time hill walking in The Cheviots when we were younger we could do that.

That sounds like a possibility as well.

In my late teens and early 20s I would cycle from Newcastle to Carlisle on minor roads that paralleled the A69. Sometimes I would cycle back and sometimes get the train. It was a favourite Wednesday afternoon or Sunday trip :)

We need to be nearer to Hartlepool than we are here at home "just in case" - but we also need a break and a chance of fresh air. If it wasn't for the Hartlepool tie we would go north.

Did you see Jim's latest "site" in NY Moors? £10pn surrounded by countryside with walks and a steam train!

Gordon

(Not as far as Scarboro'!)

Another vote for Whitley Bay CAMC.

Or as strange as it sounds have a look at CAMC Tees Barrage Site....nice site, nice walks and potentially cycling but in bizarre surroundings.

Were you from Hartlepool then?

Close to us and a really nice area a few covid cases in Whitby though recently

How about Durham rowing club cmc cl site. Hard standing with ehu and use of facilities ( would need to check this due to covid). Views of the river and a lovely walk along the river into the centre of Durham

Fully booked for all of October into November when we checked last week

We've stayed at the Barrage many times (our kids did a lot of their kayak training on the slalom run at the barrage) but we have a friend with a farm at Sedgefield where we tend to stay these days.

My parents moved to Hartlepool (dragging my sister and I in their wake) in 1966. I never did really settle there and never thought of it as home. I'm not in touch with anyone I was at school with.

We've also been there (use to live nearby) but Martin doesn't like that site as it brings back too many bad memories.
