We were thinking of doing the NCR 500 early September, no rush, take about a month. I have heard it’s rammed full of vans at the moment ? Does anyone local know if this is likely to be the case in September ?

We did the the Scottish Coast route in May/June this year. We were told it does get very busy in summer but I think Sept will be much the same as the period we did it. Although the sites have lots of Motorhomes/campervan son them it was surprising that we didn’t come across that many on the roads. It was mainly hundreds of motorcycles and cyclists. On the single track we only backed up twice in a month. The road surfaces are appalling and absolutely everything in the van rattles and shakes. If you are only doing the 500 route I would say you are missing some of the best bits of Scotland.

Agree with Jumpstart though you may find it busy until the English schools go back. Certainly, in July, I had to reverse several times, often for long distances on the Applecross Coastal road when taking my mum for lunch at the Inn.
Some of the very best places to visit are off the NC500. I would take it as a very rough guide only and do lots of other internet searches to make your own route.

We did it end of March beginning of April and just about had the whole place to ourselves.

We went to Scotland in June last year. We just meandered along, got side tracked with so much to see. The west coast was amazing, the roads were very quiet, as were the midges, but beware the Clegs! In four weeks we only got halfway round, came back via central Scotland which was very wild and remote. Its a long drive from the south coast!

We went first 2 weeks in September last year and it was fine. We had good weather and only bothered by midges on one CL at Loch Eribol. We mixed wild camping with CL and 2 C&MC sites. Took a day trip to Orkney but it’s not that difficult to take the van over if you want to spend some time there.

We thought one of the best routes we did was from Arisaig to Kilchoan where we caught the ferry to Mull. Quite a spectacular journey, better in many ways than Applecross pass. Then from Calgary on Mull to Gruline was a jaw dropping route in a Motorhome. So plenty to see off the so called 500 route.

WE decided to go the 'wrong' way round and leave the west coast till last and we saw lots of MHs going the 'right' way round. Would do the same again if I was going to repeat the trip.

It was like a motor home park in May this year in parts.

We went last September and had no problems with large numbers of motorhomes travelling the route.
