Ooops. Campsite is Brora, not Golspie. Or rather, just north of Brora. There used to be a great (basic) campsite beside the club one. Not sure if it's still there...

It's in Dalchalm, as you say just north of Brora. Think the Green Park site next door to it is closed but may reopen \ has reopened(?) as COVID restrictions ease.

We’re aiming to spend a week doing the NC500 from Inverness west to east in the last week of August. Can anyone advise us on good camping or overnight spots?
Will it be necessary to book - bearing in mind it’s school holidays? Any tips greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

We are currently on Skye. It’s absolutely pouring down. Just to cheer you up - the Camping & caravan site is full! Deep joy .

My own view is that there are many beautiful places in Scotland. Many people sticking to one route is not sensible. The roads are not suitable for heavy traffic. Too many people regard it as a challenge rather than appreciating the beauty of the area. They drive all day and spend one night somewhere and repeat the following day. I've spoken to perfectly nice people doing this. Explore on your own terms I would say.

I agree it does seem to have become a bucket tick list to do. However the scenery is fantastic. We have done parts of it and agree you must take your time. When we did it west to east we stopped at Poolewe and Scourie. Then at Laxford Bridge we turned east off 500 route and drove down a magnificent route to Lairg. Fantastic drive past mountains and lochs. Then drove to Dingwall.
Going east to west we turned south at Tongue and drove to Altnaharra again a very scenic drive. Enjoy yourselves.
I would advise booking sites in advance

This is our plan B for October if France doesn’t work out.
I doubt we’ll book much in advance and we’ll not stick to the route either but it will be a good chance to explore areas we’ve not been to - we plan to cover anything that piques our interest that we haven’t already visited north of the central belt .

So glad we did this in just over 3 weeks September 2016.
I can just imagine all the new owners of MH’s and PVC’s and the people hiring them too , attempting to do this instead of their usual package holidays.

Be aware that farmers will be in the middle of their harvest at that time of year and you could meet combines, tractors & trailers on any of the roads. Those types of vehicles are not easy to reverse!

We were on first name terms with most of them by the time we left Dumfries and Galloway. Those we didn't encounter in Brunhilde, we said 'Good morning' to from the hedgerow when we were out walking on those roads that lack footpaths ...
