don't know if anyone else has seen this report on google that the national trust have bought Eskdale campsite for 1.65 million to add to their other campsites.

I just read some of it but lost interest when I saw ....

"Maximum size of vehicle

Due to the narrow approach and size of our pitches, we cannot accept campervans or motorhomes which are more than 6.5m in length."

I have written to the Nationaltrust a couple of time asking them to open up their car parks at nights and charging £5. I think Motorhome owners would happy to pay that to park in a surcure place.

Totally agree (y)

Ahh you see all good things come in small sizes ;)

As far as I can see it's on the Hardknott Pass, that road is a challenge on a motorbike, you'd be insane to take a MH down it.

(n) Charge extra for having a dog (n)
Yes... because dogs use so many extra facilities ..I was a long time member of NT but some years ago noticed they were getting greedier and greedier so cancelled..

Eskdale can be travelled to from the west on narrow roads but it is doable in a motorhome. If travelling from the east you HAVE to go over Wrynose and Hardknott. If travelling from the south via Seathwaite you have to go over Hardknott only. The only easier option is from the south. Eskdale has a coach company base so if it's ok for them to travel to Eskdale from the west motorhomes will be fine. Did Hardknott and Wrynose on my push bike yesterday. It's bloody steep.

Spot on! I had a white knuckle, brown trouser tongue out the left and right nightmare going up or was it down that bastard, actually it might have been Wrynose??
Either way DO NOT ATTEMPT IT!!!

I liked this on the website...

They replied to my similar query saying it is in the gift of the individual NT venues - if you plan to visit, phone them up first and ask if you can overnight there.

You would have to be up and out for 7am when the car park opens for normal day traffic.

We stopped one year at Houghton Mill site and can recommend the huge scones that were on sale at the mill, delicious. Great walk by the river downstream.

Did that pass in MX5. I suffer from road sickness so demanded I drove. Well that didn’t help at all. I drove, and promptly threw up at the end!

Motorhomes, motorbikes, cars ... As Peter says the only way is on a bicycle. If you join the Fred Witton sportive you can do both passes and a couple more mini-hills for free, well mearly free. Try googling it it's even exciting to watch. Look for the bearded guy at the back puffing along past all the youngsters.

When I saw the thread title 'National Trust take over campsite' I thought it was an invasion, like Russia annexing Crimea. I'm relieved to hear it's not quite that sinister. I know a lot of people have criticisms about the NT, but glad that the organisation is not actually on a mission to create Lebensraum.

I have done it a few times in our 6.3m long PVC without any dramas. It was definatly more fun in a fast car but worst of all was running it, that was just painful!

Doesn't look that bad ...I've taken motorhomes down and up a lot narrower lol.

The National Trust warning read

Maybe 'approach' meant the turn into the gate or something, not the road along the pass.

I agree with Tam the road does not look bad, except some of the passing places.

Went over it in a Leyland Sherpa caravanet around 1975, from memory you can see Sellerfield nuclear power station from the top.

We’ve stayed overnight at the Corfe Castle car park, just the occasional one nighter. No one bothered us.

We’ve also stayed at the Kynance Cove car park. We asked the NT man and he said he went home at five and wasn’t interested what we did after that. We are NT members.
