So, as I only use it for the interweb I bought a cheap galaxy tab!
Very pleased with it too.
Now my question how do I update the Android system to latest version please?

Depends what version of Android is on it already, but it'll be along the lines of:
Settings
General
About Device
Update Now

To get to settings:
Swipe downwards from the top of the screen

It says 4.4.4 tried the software update button but it says I am up to date!
can I not install lollipop which I believe is the latest? 5. Summat?

Probably means that Google havent released 5.* for that model of tablet
I have a couple of tablets here running Android (Tab 3 and a Galaxy Note Pro), both run 4.4.2
My phone (Galaxy Note 3) is running 5.0

Mine said an update was ready. So I updated to lollipop. Its a Samsung tab's.8.4.

Samsung obviously send out the upgrades to their bigger spending clients first...

My understanding is the OS will update itself automatically - if the device can take the newer OS, as @Gizmouk said.

But after the problems I had after my Nexus upgraded you may not want it to! It does now seem to be sorted but it took a factory reset to do it, which turned out to be painless, but I tried all sorts of recommended fixes first.

Did you look at fixing your Nexus? It is possible for example to replace the battery. There are videos on YouTube covering it.

Google release lollipop 5 then it's upto Samsung to convert it to their system because it takes them such a long time they then tend to make their new product work with the new release and forget about everyone else but if it's working ok then don't worry about it, just know that your tablet was made for that software at that time

My sons wouldn't charge either
my tech friend zapped the battery with a higher voltage and hey presto, it charges

nearly binned it

Had my tab 3 a couple of years now and still running 4.2.2

Just checked for updates and currently up to date.

I think the updates are selective depending where you bought the machine.
buy from an andriod recognised dealer and you get the updates first.
i bought from an ebay seller so may never get the update.
bought shirls from america so she stands no chance whatsoever.
