many many years! since I was a kid
generally one of the popular ones around £10 will be suitable. really cheap ones are very inaccurate and more expensive is a waste as most amateurs will never use more than 2 functions

as most motorhomers only use one as a comparator/volt meter/continuity meter the cheapest one will do the job.

when I bought my first meter 2 of the guys I worked with in the energy office said it was wasted on me as I was not a sparky. That was 20 years ago and the problems I've been able to sort both at home, caravan and motorhomes have been countless. Yes a cheap multimeter will do, I bought several 5 years ago and the only fault with them was the leads coming away from the probes but easily repaired.
