More than toes wet now!
Have you still got Movie Maker installed on your pc? If so, you need to open the file and save as a .wmv file as MSWMM are not video files but project files that can only be opened by Movie Maker.
Once saved as .wmv there are a number of software programs that can convert to mp4.

No, that's the problem, Movie Maker is no longer supported.

If you've got a Windows 10 pc would this work?

Couple of quick questions.
1. Do you know what version of Movie Maker the project file was created in? Or which OS it was installed on?
2. Do you have the source files that were being used when the project was created? The MSWMM file will only contain the folder and file name details, it does not contain the actual files themselves, it only contains the pointers to those files. When you save the project as a movie file it then pulls those files into the movie.

I think I had misunderstood how Movie Maker works, so hopefully this is now sorted.
When I created the MSWMM files many years ago I thought that the file contained all the images, movies, music and captions I had used but from all your helpful answers that's not the case.
I have now gone back to an old archive and found two playable files , .aws I think, I guess I had to make 2 due to size.
So the outcome is,. I have the videos to show the Granddaughter so all is well.

Thanks all for your help.

Glad you found a workaround.
MSWMM files we’re quite proprietary.
