I have a chausson flash 10 on a fiat chassis with a 2.2 engine, I'm only averaging 23 mpg
I try try to keep around 60-65 mph on the motorway,
Any one else tell me what mpg they get as I feel this is pretty crap.

You are driving a under powered Luton van , with the aerodynamics of a brick built chicken house, if you slow down to 50/55 you might get 25/26, if you do not you will have to lump it

when you say you 'try to keep around 60-65', is that try to go that fast or do you hold back to that speed?

we drive at about 60 and get 20, so don't upgrade to anything bigger

but other things make a big difference, MH mileage, how well serviced, how heavy, but biggest of all headwinds can take 25% off mpg, but never seem to give it back when behind you

I think it isn't bad. It might improve if the ratio of motorway to A road driving is in favour of motorways and you don't exceed 60. Not sure which variant of the Ford engine you have but if it is the 120 it probably needs right foot encouragement to get anywhere! We have a 7 metre Pilote A class on the ubiquitous fiat 2.3 150 and get about 25 MPG driving at about 60 on the motorways.

The biggest difference in consumption is caused by the right foot. We no longer hurry to get anywhere. Our other thoughts are "we don't do a huge number of miles a year (6000) and in proportion to the overall cost of the van itself, the diesel costs are not significant so basically we don't become bothered about it.

you will increase MPG by around 10% if you drop to 55 -60 mph ..

it is also more relaxing as you will now be in the slow lane keeping pace with the HGVs that are governed to 56 mph .. rather than continually overtaking them and changing lanes continually ..

you will also benefit from using their slipstream ..

what's the rush.. enjoy the drive and arrive less stressed..

Rollerteam Granduca 295 P . up rated 4.7 ton . havnt got a clue , never worries me how much fuel just enjoy the adventure .

Exactly! Spend 40k, 60k whatever on a van and then worry about the MPG. A great way to get stressed over a holiday........ Save money, get an advance train ticket and a bus to wherever you are going and stay in a tent.......

Edit - apologies to Adam the OP, if the above sounds a bit harsh. It isn't intended to be. The consensus seems to be that you are about right with consumption, but the main point,is having established that you are in about the right zone, then just sit back and enjoy the experience...... Nobody did this for a cheap holiday; it is more about the lifestyle. Try a Funster rally; we never really fancied the idea as we didn't know anyone. We do, now!!!

I got 29 mpg in UK from Wirral to Folkestone via motorways - once in France and A/C running down to 27 mpg. 55 mph normal - sometimes a little quicker to pass wagons if speed differential too low but do reduce after overtake

Getting better
Transit based Geist 140bhp. I agree with the general view that the fuel cost is not really significant part of the holiday when compared to the capital cost, depreciation etc of a MH.
If I push on to 65-70 then expect 21mpg, stay at 56 with the trucks for a relaxing trip 25mpg.
Not really an issue....more concerned at the cost of Beer & Gin...now that can be significant!

Drove to Fort William from Plymouth last month, about 600 miles with a strong tailwind, got 31 mpg out of our 3 litre PVC. This was the best we have ever achieved. I think the very strong tailwind must have helped although of course the majority of the trip was on motorways. By the time we got back home after touring bits of the East coast we achieved overall about 29mpg. This was better than average but I had also found the tyre pressures were a bit low so had blown them up to the pressures shown in the handbook before the trip and this made a difference I am sure. Generally drove at around 60 (accurate GPS speed) on the motorways but pootled in the Highlands.

Your MPG figure is about right for the 3ltr Fiat in a van conversion, I get similar results and very satisfied. The smaller engined motorhomes are working much harder and more so if they have an overcab bunk area so they are bound to use more fuel.

Our van since new ( last June ) has averaged a whisker under 28mpg for all its 9000 miles. I don't hang about too much, generally 65-70 on motorways and at the legal limit on other roads.
I had a couple of days when I kept the speed down a bit more and checked the consumption. It didn't really make any difference, so I carried on as normal.
Most of the driving we do is in France and at just over £1 a litre (€1.26), we don't really worry when we fill up, we know we are saving nearly £30 on a tank full compared to UK prices.

I get up to 22mph BUT the are so many factors affecting it, I travel at 60- 65 according to if I am towing or not, use cruise a lot and use the van a lot in the autumn/spring when it can be windy, with a 5.2 ton brick with a 3L engine, my worst was approx 18mpg going north on the M1 from Rugby against a bad headwind, I have given up thinking about MPG now:cry:

Several years now
We have a 14 plate Chausson Flash 10, with a Transit 2.2 140ps engine. Over last couple of weeks we have done 1300 miles, mixture of motorways and normal roads. We average 60 on motorways but still have plenty of power to overtake, which we do as required.

We got 29 mpg, which for a brand new engine, with only 2k on clock is not bad. Would expect to get over 30mph when it's up to 20k.
