Update from my original post. We have hit the 3000 miles mark. On our trip this weekend, on country lanes, lots of gear changes we averaged 26.2 mpg. At one point it was up to 27.1 ........bizarre. :Eeek:

Nobody is admitting to any coasting other than travelling somewhere near the Atlantic then?

There has been a lot bandied about about this ultra low sulphate diesel. Independent studies have proven that in actual fact it is destroying many diesel engines through lack of lubricant. Premature injector pump failure being the main problem. To combat this many fuel companies are now mixing varying amounts of biofuels in with there fossil fuel.
There is more nonsense written by uninformed people about biofuels than there is about motorhome gas attacks.
If biofuels are made correctly and to the correct tolerances any diesel engine will run happily on it. The problem starts when you get Joe public making biofuel in his garden shed with no knowledge whatsoever and selling it to his mates down the pub.
Good biofuel is easy to make.....,but poor quality biofuel is easier to make .

My other vehicle is a Land Rover Discovery and does only a little more to the gallon than my 7.5m motorhome. It is the consensus on our Disco forum that low sulphur diesel does a fair bit of damage through lack of lubrication, and many add around 300ml of two stroke oil to a tankful, which seems to also give slightly better mpg. I have also tried this on the MH but it had no noticeable effect on mpg. From those who take engines to bits it does appear that it deposits less muck in the turbo and reduces the load in the particulate filter too.

24 sounds very low for me for a van of that weight and size.

We get 27 - 28 with our new Kontiki, 3.0, 5000kg, six wheeler, and for the doubters...

If I drive naturally we get about 23 mpg. If I drive like I should about 26-27 mpg.

I have just last week completed over 6000 mile round trip to Scandinavia with ALL types of roads and road conditions with speeds between 40mph and max 55mph when cruising, and with an all up weight towing a trailer as well of 5.5t. My vehicle is a Renault Master 3ltr 140bhp 06 plate Mobilvetta Kimu 122 and I got an average of 26.18 MPG overall, with the worst being 22MPG and the best being 32.03MPG, but I think overall it is all down to how you drive to what you get out of your vehicle, Regards Garry Flatpackchicken

Just for continuing interest I have checked my last three fuel stops, 63, 69 and 74 ltrs. giving 30.7, 30.34 and 30.65 mpg over about 1400 miles in the last couple of months. Quite pleased with the result and very consistent. All of this was with supermarket fuel.

I have a 2007 autoquest 100 on a peugeot 2.2 litre engine and achieve 30-31 mpg. We have had it as high as 35 and as low as 25 but around 30 or above is where it seems to average out. If you keep below 50mph the consumption with the overcab bed is much better.

We have just had a round trip of just under 3000 miles UK-Croatia-UK including a couple of the islands averaged 24.8 on trip computer on a big tag axle Comanche. I drive around 65-70 mph on the autoroutes. I am more than happy with that and was expecting it to be a little lower. Did a similar journey in May when we travelled in convoy and kept the speed around 60-65 and got just over 25 mpg.. I suppose if I kept it around 55mph then it would be much better but I like to get there and then I can relax.

Thats pretty good I think. Yours is a big bus.

We are doing about the same on the computer but are smaller and lighter than you ( well the van is anyway::bigsmile:) and have the smaller engine.

Our new Pug based MH weighs in at a tad over 3500kg and has just over 1800 miles on it now and the computer tells me it is averaging 27.4 mpg. Most of that on cheaper French diesel, around £1.14 per litre.
Suits me!
I heard a rumour that this 2.2litre 130bhp engine is made by Ford
