Doubt I'll be saying anything new here. We have had three van; a 6.5m overcab with the old Fiat 2.8tdi. Used to get around 25 mpg no matter how carefully I drove. Then got a 7.3m Fiat based Chausson with the 6 speed 2.3 130 engine. Low profile, and regularly got around 32 mpg. Now have an A class 6.5m again with the older Fiat 2.8tdi and we get around 26mpg again. I rarely drive faster than 65 and often around 60, because if you're on a several thousand mile trip, getting 25mpg as opposed to around 20, which is what I get at 70 mpg is a huge saving. When we did Morocco last year we covered 6000 miles door to door. Not saying we always got 25mpg, because the run up the coast from Essaouria was a mad dash, but just do the maths. 6000 at 20mpg = 300 gallons. 6000 at 25mpg is 240 gallons. What's the cost of a gallon of diesel nowadays? £6?

Diesel is around £6+ and LPG can be got for around £2.90+ per gallon.
We would all like to be getting 50+mpg, and paying £1 per gallon. But, it 'aint going to happen, so let's all relax, and thoroughly enjoy what we have, whilst we can.
I am sure there are thousands of people who would love to be in our shoes.

I would have thought that a hire vehicle of any type would be poor mpg when its not yours, when I drive any vehicle of mine is with a bit of tlc but if I have a hire one I don't much care. And like someone said how does the dealer know what fuel has been put in. I have a 2.8 Ducato and get 24mpg or more 90% of the time. sales men and their b.s

:thumb:Hi everyone, first post ........ we regularly get about 30mpg on our really old hymer 544 non turbo Fiat motor, we discovered the front carpet had slipped under the accelerator pedal and was preventing the van going much above 55 ..... I now say to Kath(wife) "autocruise" and she kicks the carpet over, if we come to a really steep hill she pulls it back. van will do 75 but why would you drive a vehicle with the drag co-efficient of a large barn at that speed

Bought our van with 2ltr JTD engine 3 yrs ago-it seemed a bit sluggish on hills and mpg on a couple of local trips seemed to be around 25-28mpg.
I had it remapped by Celtic tuning and we went on a 2,400 mile trip around France,MPG came out out at 32mpg as near as my maths could get it ::bigsmile:
So,that's it-my van does 32mpg-not checked it since, why bother? It's our van and we'll be going wherever we go regardless of mpg ::bigsmile:

Err.............we intend to do 12 to 15 thousand miles per year so mpg is very important to us (why give money away?)

If you do that kind of mileage you should take a look at having a vortex exhaust fitted. We used to get between 16 and 18 mpg we now get between 18 and 22mpg
We save on average £10 per 200 mile trip.

We get about 28 and we do 55mph in our 2005 2.3 td Fiat, no sweat.

But my question is, how do autos compare?

Our car is auto and Mrs loves it, but it is thirsty.

As has been said, be mindful of what your vehicle is doing mpg wise but don’t get paranoid about it. Use the information to keep an eye on how the motor is working poorer mpg can indicate a problem such as a brake dragging soft tyre etc. knowing that you have X amount of fuel to do X amount of miles can be useful when the tank is low and no fuel station in sight, I always have a 2gal can spare never used it myself but lent it out a few times. I have also found that using the super fuel is no bad thing, please please please try not to use bio diesel But most of all love the journey.

My MH is a six speed auto based on a Renault master and I get 33 to the gallon, cruising at a true 62mph. Speedo says 65mph. That's fully loaded including a motorbike on the back

If the cost of fuel/mpg is not an issue for you then why not put the good stuff in? But, modern diesel engines are far removed from the older ones with huge deference's in the fuel delivery system and I am not saying the new is any better that the old they both have their pro's and con's but new high pressure common rail systems with electric fuel injector's will suffer over time if you constantly use bio diesel fuel with the problems developing quicker the higher the bio content. The internet will be a good source for more info on this.

Firstly whats "good stuff". Secondly, one of the reasons I only run engines with Bosch mechanical injector pumps is so I do not have any of the many issues that drive by wire pumps have. Diesel is the dirtiest fuel available since the demise of the steam engine. It has all sorts of impurities including water, which is the killer of any diesel engine. Boat owners will tell you about "diesel bug" which is also common in little used motorhomes. I would certainly not call diesel "good stuff", its far from it.

So you don't know much about modern fuel injection systems then! the good stuff being ultra low sulphur fuels. And you are quiet right the older fuel systems will work with high bio content fuel but then coal still burns on fires.
Twenty years ago a 2.0l diesel was about as powerful as a lawn mower engine now look at them. like I said pro's and con's put lots of bio diesel in a modern engine and pay the price:cry:

Later this week we're off to France for a month and I'm eager to find out how much fuel it uses and how much I save by buying French diesel rather than UK fuel.

At the moment I'm averaging over 55 mpg driving locally ........... ooops! sorry - that's my Skoda Fabia!

I've got a 7m MH with 6 gears on a Renault Master base and it better do at least 30 mpg or it'll get a Basil Fawlty type thrashing!

Back to the packing - so much to do - so little time.

I didn't say that! and apologies if I implied it. My wording I think said modern electronic fuel systems which just about all engines less than ten year old will have.

There has been a lot bandied about about this ultra low sulphate diesel. Independent studies have proven that in actual fact it is destroying many diesel engines through lack of lubricant. Premature injector pump failure being the main problem. To combat this many fuel companies are now mixing varying amounts of biofuels in with there fossil fuel.
There is more nonsense written by uninformed people about biofuels than there is about motorhome gas attacks.
If biofuels are made correctly and to the correct tolerances any diesel engine will run happily on it. The problem starts when you get Joe public making biofuel in his garden shed with no knowledge whatsoever and selling it to his mates down the pub.
Good biofuel is easy to make.....,but poor quality biofuel is easier to make .

Our Euro 5 is now 12 months old and set the trip on leaving home early May. After nearly 3000 miles in France mainly on cruise control set at 70 mph, up hill down dale we are recording 26.6 mpg. Thats loaded for travel at 3.45 tonne.

If we stick to below 60 mph we get a few mpg more.

In the past two years I have kept mileage and fuel records to check my MH trip computer against the actual data. With a trailer and motorcycle on I have been getting 28 to 29 mpg (that figure is compiled from fuel receipts and mileage log over two months and 3000 miles.) Without the trailer I can get 30 to 32 mpg. Having the trailer on may help mpg in that I drive at 50mph on A roads and 60mph on motorways. Go to 70 and the figure drops alarmingly
