Thank you to @Snowbird for the advice. We have just enjoyed my first attempt at cooking mussels in a white wine and creme fraiche sauce accompanied by hot crusty bread and a plate of chips, all washed down with a nice bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. I suppose I will have to drink the rest of the bottle of white wine too as it will only be wasted otherwise . Thank you Mrs Snowbird for remembering the finer details of the recipe that Mr Snowbird forgot. (y)

Mussels in white wine is one of my favourite recipes and so easy to make but I find you need two bottles. The first is to keep the chef focused on the task while cooking and of course to cook the mussels in. The second bottle is for when you sit down to eat it all!

Firstly I tasted the white wine to make sure it was good enough and wouldn't spoil the mussels, then I used slightly less than half a bottle to cook the mussels. We had the bottle of red to wash the food down which now means I will have to drink the rest of the bottle of white!! My kind of meal!! I think this might become a regular thing on the menu while we are in Spain!! :wine:

Mussels, whelks and winkles.....otherwise known as SNOT IN A SHELL.

Turns my stomach thinking about it.
And they cook them with GARLIC!

My wife was the same until I cooked her a dish of mussels - but she draws the line at octopus so still work for me to do there!

Garlic and ginger are a must in my fridge. Not many meals you can't put them in and sooooo beneficial to your health. Fresh ginger with lemon and honey in hot water makes a fab tea. Had it in Goa every morning (y)

About 30 years ago I tried Octopus in lemon sauce, I thought it was lovely until I turned a piece over and saw the tentacles. I couldn't eat it after that

There was a program on the box recently when they were eating octopus so fresh (and raw) it was still wriggling and the bits of tentacle were trying to grab the presenter's lip as he was trying to swallow it.

Food with attitude!

Now that would put me off, sounds a bit reminiscent of "I'm a celebrity". :Eeek:

Don't forget - don't eat em without an R in the month or is that an old wives tale?

I think you are safe with farmed mussels at any time of the year but they vary in "meat" content, being at their worst after spawning in the spring.

Thanks DevonBeekeeper. Think we'll still stick to only with an R in the month. Only had them once in a non-R month and definitely not as nice so haven't bothered since.

If you are passing this place in Mull on Weds pm through to Friday, get some mussels from them - they are the best that I have had. They are shipped around the country but taste best when just harvested.

Wow, they're cheap! Would definitely buy some if we were in the area,
