Hi all.

Another daft newbie question for me I’m afraid.

We’ve had our van now for a year and, not being great TV watchers, haven’t got round to trying to make the television work.

I just had a go and managed to switch it on successfully but I got a message saying that there was no signal.

It’s an Avtex TV and we have a satellite unit with signal amplifier (see picture). It all looks like it’s on and set up okay but I’m not sure which satellite I should be choosing for Nottingham and can’t easily find a reference by googling it.

Which satellite is best? What could I be missing to not get a signal?

Thanks a lot.
Chris

Astra 2 is the satellite you need for UK TV, as for the signal could the system possibly need a software update? We have an Oyster dish which allows software downloads, it should be in your manual. Other than that, I'm not techy enough to suggest anything further!

Edit: looking at your manual it looks like an aerial rather than a satellite dish which I've never used before but I thought they just worked like a normal free view aerial? I'm probably wrong but I don't think it uses satellites!

Erm. Dunno. How would I tell? The amplifier is the one I have included a picture of the manual for...
I've updated my first post, have you a satellite dish fitted as well? I think the aerial you have fitted can be rotated to get a signal.

It looks like you are using a freeview ariel so you need to press the AQT button and it will auto tune and find channels in your area, the just use the source button and go to digital to view channels.

The amplifier looks the same as mine but I only have it on a ‘normal’ aerial. You adjust the aerial (rotate/lift/lower) until the light goes from red to green (or as close to green as possilble). Once the aerial is adjusted you simply set the TV to auto search.

Possibly the same if you have a satellite attached or maybe self scanning, sorry can’t help with that.

If it’s a normal manual up/down/rotate aerial you can also tilt it by turning the little white handle at the bottom (handle looks like a little wifi antenna) only found this out a couple of weeks ago, I’m sure many others have/had no idea this is what it does.

Are you using a satellite dish, an aerial or both.

The amp you are showing should only take an aerial signal (I believe) a satellite line would go straight into your TV or through a control unit.

Motorhoming since 2015......
By the look of things, you only have a terrestrial aerial for Freeview, not Freesat. Even though your tv has a satellite tuner built-in, unless you connect a satellite dish to it, you will not be able to receive satellite tv..... The dish would be on the roof of your van if it is there.......

I had my van 4 months before tried the telly, turned it on yep lovely, no signal, can't tune it in, 2 months later found the switch in the wardrobe to turn on the satellite and magic auto tune and he presto telly 📺

we have an Avtex TV whenever we park up and want to use the TV we normally have to re tune it, it is a simple matter of pressing and holding the AQT button on the remote (the big red one) and following the instructions on screen, (make sure you have DTV selected first), our TV was purchased in 2017 (well it came with the motorhome when we bought it) but I would think most Avtex TV's are pretty similar.

needless to say we don't use Satellite.

Update. Thanks for the comments and suggestions so far they have been very useful.

It seems I have an aerial with an amplifier and a satellite dish. I have been able to get a signal/channels with the aerial. It’s not very good but I haven’t raised the aerial so I suspect I could make it better by doing so.

Now that I have found the satellite dish controller, I have switched it on but it just endlessly searches. It seems it may, therefore, be a question of updating the software if the satellite signals have changed. I don’t have a manual for it and can’t see a model number. The photo is attached. If anyone can tell me anything about it or what model it is that would be very helpful and then I can do some Google searching to find a manual and information on how to update software etc.

Thanks. Chris

If you raise the aerial and still can’t get a green light then try tilting from flat to upright with the little white handle if it’s that type.

When the dish is searching for a signal, make sure that there aren’t any trees or buildings in the way or it will just keep on searching.
