As we were bored over the weekend, we thought that we would visit a few local MH dealers.

First one we visited was a large dealer of good quality second hand MHs.
Met by a salesman who asked us to use gloves etc, my comment to him was is how are things going with this Corona virus, his comment was that they had only been open for one week and had SOLD 30 in that week!. I thought to myself that’s a bit of salesman licence, but when I spoke to one of the bosses he said ,best week ever we have sold 29.

Second one was a major dealer with several major brands. Salesman comment from them was is that we cannot keep up with demand we have sold over the last few days 40 vans.

Third visit was once again a major dealers again with some major brands. Comment from the boss I met was that “that I have been in the business for over thirty years and have NEVER sold so many MHS in such I short time”

There is going to be a lot of MHS on the road when all this is over!

But what have they not sold over the past 3 months!

Well at least it helps balance things a bit. Some of the smaller dealers will have been really struggling.

I'm not saying its a bad thing but think there will be an initial pent up demand same with cars but if there is economic hardship it could be a longer term reduced demand.

We went to a couple of dealers recently and both were very busy. One was largely specialising in ex-rental vans and was searching everywhere for new stock as he was selling them so fast. He was obviously finding some because because about five turned up while we looked around.

Another one we have spoken to said that they reckoned they'd run out of new ones very soon as apparently the manufacturers have put production on hold for the next few months. I'm not sure if this is everyone or just their particular suppliers.

Even though they have been closed during lockdown several dealers have basically sold a bunch just by people calling or placing deposits via the internet and are only now completing purchases made in the last few months.

As said they have 12 week's sales to catch up on.

Well, if their staff have been on furloug and have been getting paid by the Gov. then the last 12 weeks costs have been lower to them. Therefore a big increase in sales now should be extra profit ? And if big demand allows the dealer to not give discounts then it's profit ++.

Does mean that campsites are going to be full to bursting this year !!
I suppose it depends on the status of all these "buyers". Spur of the moment solution to CV with no real experience and try it once to find it does not work for them, or pent up demand. So its a question that needs to be asked as a supplementary to the sales guys to get a clear perspective.
mobile.de had 52 new Morelos for sale 10 days ago, today its 40.

Don amott was on tv last week saying he had done his best week ever with all being online purchases , sight unseen 🤔, scary if its true

I was thinking along the same lines.

How many buyers have been sitting at home viewing paper or online brochures, but without much knowledge.

How many of the purchases will be back on the forecourts within 6 months?

'Busbuddy's' post about Don Amott's quite about sight unseen - very worrying.

I wonder how many asked about payload?

Let's just watch the market.

What are dealers going to sell when current stock is finished?

Exactly. Will there be some bargains this winter, I would guess so.
Those that have been watching and waiting expecting bargains from desperate dealers post lockdown, how's that working?

Thats's good lets hope the staff share in the profits.

I think half of the problem is all the social influencers promoting "wild camping" lifestyle, posting amazing pictures from far off lands and enticing the non campers that it's so easy to find a spot and stay over night

Once reality kicks in there'll be a load of vans for sale driving down the prices

A lot of it may be concerns about flying and/or holidaying abroad. i know Mrs L has expressed concerns about flying, so we'll be holidaying in the UK this year (although I'm working on the Canaries for Christmas). It seems other people have the same concerns and see MHs as an ideal solution, can still go away, can still maintain social distancing and still control their immediate environment.

I'm not in a position to even start seriously looking until next year now as my redundancy has been delayed, so with any luck, all these people buying up vans now will be eager to offload them by the time i have money to buy.

Yes I saw that & it surprised me.

Didn't surprise me, a dealer I know from LinkedIn has been in business over 20 years and had their busiest sales week ever, right in the middle of lockdown, people buying sight unseen from a website. Another small dealer I know normally sells 2 or 3 vans a week and is now selling two every day.

Yes but it's the amateurs who, realising they are not going to go abroad this year, by their cheap camping starter pack from Halfords, pitch up next to us, get rained on and/or blown about during the night and then knock on the door looking for shelter I'm worried about! Going to be looking for sites without facilities to reduce the risk!

I also wonder about how many of these 'Sales' the dealers are reporting are only 'deposits taken', how many are awaiting finance decisions, so the dealer can get their commission on that, how many will fail inspections.

That's not counting the one's where the husband gets home and the wife screams 'YOU HAVE DONE WHAT?'

I suspect 40-50% of the Sales do not go through. But The dealers will not tell the public about that.

Geoff

Alot of the big dealers are still closed in Wales and Scotland so I guess it pushes more sales in dealerships in England if loads can't trade?

I went to DA to view a van that I considered buying on line as it's the new model to my current van, thankfully I didn't because in the flesh it was very disappointing and for a brand new just delivered had parts falling off. I must have seen 20 new and second hand with sold signs. The salesman was smiling .

Glad we ordered ours in January. :giggle:
Last we heard there had been a three week delay in manufacturing, so hopefully get it towards the end of September.(y)

I am a recent purchaser who is hopefully going to pick up our van later this week, definitely one of the 'nocies' referred to above. As I posted in my intro thread we have done things backwards by putting a deposit down before really knowing what we were looking for and doing the research afterwards. We viewed several vans (in person) and found one we liked and it's a refundable deposit so that has given us some breathing space to check we've done the right thing. So a couple of weeks of digging on this forum and others has been very useful and we're still happy with what we're getting and what to look out for when we go to collect. You have to start somewhere!

I'm not keen on the hassle of flying at the best of times and certainly not for the next few months. We've done some camping but usually rent cottages. We've gone for a MH to give us some more flexibility with weekends and spur of the moment trips through out the year (and to avoid changeover days). We've not really got it to take abroad, though it would be nice in the future if we're not about to see the end of quick and easy channel crossings. We've got it really just to go to places in this country that we'd otherwise probably never visit.
