Hi All
Advise help needed.We have just viewed an chausson 638 EB.2018 plate.For 45 K.lovely
Condition.I have a concern on the payload.only a spare 300 kilos.we intend to travel to Europe for couple of months.
We also have 2 large dogs.Questions I am hoping someone can help me with is
Is this make and model any good for the price. Also how strict is it to abide to the pay load.I have a c1 on my license
So is it possible to increase the payload. And if possible how easy to do and how expensive.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks Tim

Are you sure??

The 2017 model is 693kg?

Did you see the plate?

Cheers James

Price looks quite good there is one listed by a dealer at 51½k.
300kg is nothing like enough payload being on a Ford chassis it should be easy to uprate to 4000kg, two companies can do the paperwork SV Tech cost £312 & Van Weight Engineering at £175 with the Ford I think its just a paper exercise, Both companies with give advice & tell you what you can go to. VED will come down from £280 to £165.
Be prepared for DVLA to take weeks to process it.

I would say for a couple of months you're going need that much EACH!
Being more than 5% will mean unloading at the roadside and getting a fine. You will have to arrange for your stuff to be collected.
More than 15% (I think) and the van will not be allowed to continue and will be impounded ....with a big fine

And you can't leave the country with a sub 3500kgs van loaded at plus 3500kgs onto the Continent until such time as DVLA supply you with a V5C showing an increased max weight.
To do so would run the risk of wrath 'over there' by the authorities, should you be stopped or God forbid, have an accident.

Was thinking of up plating ours but going to spain in April given the delays of dvla would it be best to wait until I come back and have quite a few weeks booked in uk

Toss a coin, I think I would wait until you come back.

If you fill everything out for van weight engineering, you could be in a position to actually send everything off recorded delivery tomorrow or the day after.
On the presumption you are going to uprate anyway, why not crack on with it and hope it comes back by April.
If it doesnt you are no worse off

Edit: I should add i have sent mine off on Monday this week and going on holiday late March. I have copies of my V5 in case it doesnt come back in time

Thanks for the advice.
If we up the payload.Does that mean you then have to have the c1 to drive.

Sent our up plating to DVLA 1st week of December... not a peep as yet but fingers crossed

All the best

Dvla lead time might surprise you - in a good way!

Van weight engineering were great to deal with and super quick to sort the paperwork for my upplate. Was expecting terrible lead times from DVLA, but it was something like 17 days from posting just before Christmas to receiving the revised V5 early Jan.

My insurer wouldnt cover the upplate which needed air assist and considered it as modifications so I’ve had to change insurer. Now have better breakdown cover on the new policy.

He will, he won't have a V5 to take with him. If anything happens, police won't do anything until they have seen the V5.

Will it effect the resale. If up the payload and need the c1.
Or would I need to put the pay load back down.

A photo of it has sufficed for me on the 2 occasions I have required it

I don't think so, but it's easy to put it back down, you just need to weigh it empty and send the ticket with the correct form to DVLA.

I had a car broken into once Gemdarms wouldn't give me a report until they had seen the V5, of course it was across the other side of Lyon in my briefcase in my customer's office.
Not tried giving them a copy, but I will admit because DVLA took so long upgrading my last van I went to France with a colour copy, you could hardly tell it from the original.

When giving advice on the forum I tend to stick to the rules as if you say a copy will be fine, he's bound to get an awkward Gendarm who wants the original.

My paperwork took 5 weeks, but that included the Christmas peroid

I will call sv TEC tomorrow to see what's possible. With all things considered. And the fact we want to use it for a couple of months trip to europe.we have a viewing on Monday to see a 2015 Carthage 143 A class.would that be a better option for another 10 k.
Sorry for so many questions.
But a lot of money to get it wrong. Thanks Tim

Appreciating that, but I doubt many in this country carry their original V5, insurance and MOT either, and you are to show them if required.

Obviously that doesnt make any sense at all, as leaving your V5 in your vehicle is not the greatest of moves if the vehicle were stolen, (in UK) so they invented the HORT/1 or 7 day wonder in this country. They may not have a similar system but I would suspect 9/10 when spoken to in an agreeable manner, would accept the copy.
The other time I didnt have my V5 was when I had fags stolen from my car and had to make a report without it (pre mobile phones) and luckily the phrase "Je suis un gendarme d'Anglais" got me past the winning post on that one.

Not wanting to hijack the post, could I ask if purchasing a new 6.3 PVC, would there be an additional cost to up plaiting? What would be the maximum allowed?

Are you sure on that payload does seem very light?

3200kg for empty van which isn't even a 6 berth...?

3850kg

4000kg with heavier springs and tyres

Fiat I presume?

Depends if it is on the light or heavy chassis. With a Fiat the light chassis can go to 3850kg, the heavy (maxi) 4250kg.

Not a legal requirement to carry them in the UK but it is in other countries.

It is. It just isnt enforced, somewhat like breathaliser in France used to be.

Showing your driving documents

If a police officer asks you to, you must be able to show:

  • your driving licence
  • a valid insurance certificate
  • a valid MOT certificate (if your vehicle needs one)
If you don’t have the documents with you at the time, you may be asked to take them to a police station within 7 days.

I was quoted a bit more than that on a light chassis with spring air assist and heavier rated tyres.

Also no requirement for V5 which is what we were talking about.
