Hi
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for reasonable cost Motorhome hire for, say, 6 months over the winter? We have our lovely 2 berth motorhome and will be popping off to Portugal for the winter. My brother and his wife would love to join us from the USA and do their Europe trip. Just seems so expensive and tricky to get insurance, etc. Any thoughts 'outside' the box would be most appreciated!

How many seat belts do you have in yours?
Just wondered if you could tow one of those tiny caravans or something similar just to be used for sleeping in.
Motorhome hire is expensive, I know a fella that charges £700 per week and they're booked out all of the time, I'd be tempted to buy a reasonable motorhome and re sale after, at least they'll recoup a big chunk of the money

£700 is cheap nowadays for a week.

If i were going to hire a MH for 6 months i would consider buying one and selling it on after my trip. Might be the most cost effective way to do it. Save aukward questions on insurance.

Thanks guys! You're thinking on the same line as me, to buy here and then sell on - it's just I will have to source and buy and then left holding the baby and hoping for a sale- hmm!! It's tricky whichever way. Towing a small van sounds good - but our van would need additional supports added for the tow bar - and then 4 adults living so close!! My brother is insane - 6 months!!! I'd be insane too!! I'll keep searching for inspiration! !

On and off for many years.
You might also have an issue trying to get insurance....... but I would also buy and sell on. £700 x 26 weeks is more than £18,000 !!!!!

You could have a look at Just Go motorhome hire, who have a huge fleet, so must be doing something right.

Thank you. I've already contacted Just Go and waiting for their reply - along with half a dozen more! So expensive - looks like a good business, motor home hire!

I hired from these people while waiting for our MH.

http://www.motorholme.co.uk/vansale.htm

The link takes you to their ex rental van page, which has a number of vans on it that are not much more than the £18k figure quoted elsewhere in this post.

If you do go down the buy and sell route, this might be a useful link?

Caroline,

.........and don't forget the T&Cs. We looked at hiring a MoHo once but it was the T&Cs that finally put us off.

In our case a scratched toilet seat would have cost us a zillion pounds (as per the T&Cs) so it was a no-no for us.

A 6-month stint is ample time for your relatives to run up a bill.

Good luck,

Andrew
