If you plan to sell your motorhome, don’t do it through these guys unless you want to be ripped off.

I needed to sell my motorhome quickly and didn’t want any hassle myself and so I appointed these guys as brokers.

We agreed a fixed value that I would receive when the vehicle was sold with anything over and above that they would keep as commission. Straight forward you would think!

An offer was made and Motorhome Depot told me that it was BELOW our agreed value, so as I needed a quick sale I agreed to lower the value.

I subsequently found out that the ‘van sold for £4k more than the salesman told me which put it ABOVE the original agreed value. When I challenged him he confirmed how much the ‘van sold for, but refused to honour our original agreement, leaving me £5k out of pocket.

So BE WARNED….

Don’t do business with these guys, they lie and rip you off!

Motorhome Depot are just franchises, and reading the website complaints procedure, it seems they pretty much absolve themselves of anything until you given the franchisee a chance to resolve. All fair and good, but the time scales they suggest are far from fair...

Given the franchisee was blatantly dishonest, I would go straight in with a solicitors letter - with a copy to "head office"

I would just like to point out that this is a completely different firm than motorhome department who I have dealt with and found to be completely honest with what you will get.

Good to point that out unfortunate for them having a similar name.

We’ve been debating whether to sell the Moho or not and I was pleasantly surprised at the price that Motorhome Depot were going to advertise at.. I know they take a hefty commission but it was tempting.

SWMBO needs another couple of sessions of Radiotherapiy now to keep her condition stable and she thinks it’s too cold to use it now anyway till next spring 😡 hence the debate about selling.

The only thing putting me off selling is Covid as it might be the best option we have of getting away once the Welsh lockdown lifts and the weather warms up

Try the one I suggested, think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I may do that... to be fair I think I’d simply knock a grand off the price they were going to advertise at and take my chances but she’s staying put for now..

We sold ours through Motorhome Depot, West Sussex area franchisee, and all negotiations were open, courteous and to the satisfaction of all 3 parties.

Seems you got a bad apple and definitely worth speaking to head office. They must care about their reputation.

You ought to name and shame the franchise involved so others don't deal with them

You agreed to sell for the lower price. Don't see the problem you should have simply said no to lowering the price ..... When I sold via Motorhome Depot, I gave them a price that I wanted and told them nothing less. Was not bothered what they sold it for so long as I got what I wanted.

I know this might sound harsh but have they done anything wrong, they told you the offer minus their commission.
Example you agree you want £50k and anything above they keep, if they sell for £54k both happy.

Example 2 they get offered £49k they tell you price minus their commission and you say ok not realising their making money out of it or did you expect them to take nothing if your agreed amount wasn’t reached.

I sold with a similar company about 5 years ago they called me saying they had an offer 2k less than my minimum I said no and they came back an hour later matching my offer.

But the person selling the motorhome lied so that an agreement was made at the lower price and (I suggest) took advantage if the need for a quick sale. To me that is not acceptable.

EDIT lorger the original poster said he was told the van was sold for less than his aggreed price when it sold for more - perhaps John May could confirm the agreed price and the amount he was told it sold for as well as the actual achieved price to clarify what happened..... say £20,000 agreed amount and what was he told it sold for and what it actually sold for .....

I would guess they told him how much they could get him for it or did he really think when the price was less than he had wanted that they were selling it for no commission. They never tell you the selling price they only tell you what you’ll get, I’m sure if he’d held out he could have got another 2k no problem.
at the end of the day he could have said no but he was obviously happy with the offer until he found out they made money

It's totally crooked what they did, bare faced lying hoping that the customer will accept the lower price and pocket the difference.

Wonder how many times they have done this, crooked bleeders, I bet they started low and said to people someone has made an offer of £500 less than you wanted, eventually getting greedier and greedier. Knowing full well that a lot of people will accept a slightly lower offer.

Talk about dishonest, absolute disgrace.

As I see it...

Example:...

van on sale for 50k
Owner wants 45k
Dealer tells owner He’s had an offer of 40k owner accepts...
Dealer really sold for 49k

5k commission
4K in dealers pocket..

as far as I’m concerned, to me that’s theft and fraud... I’d phone the cops...

This used to be called 'Obtaining a pecuniary advantage', a criminal offence. In simple terms: fraud. Call the cops.

It would be interesting to know if the commission they made was more less or the same as they were originally due to make. If it's more having told the owners it was not getting any offers yes it's fraud. If their margin was lower than on the original sale it could be argued its just the consequence of selling that way. I recon after seeing this I would at least try selling myself for a few weeks first.

Bang on, they are meant to be running a business, who wants to deal with liars and crooks.

How can the commission be the same as they originally were going to make, they told the owner an offer had been made but they told him it was 4 grand less than it really was and this then put it above the original agreed price.

So if they had said we want 4k to advertise and sell your van at no cost to you and we will get you 50k = them selling it for 54k is that acceptable? They then come back and say we can only get you 48 k so will you take that ? All you have to do is say no I want 50k so go find a buyer for 50k ....They do not tell you how much they sell your van for but it does not take a lot of finding the advertisement 😉 after all you have make year and model van. As it was/ is they ask if you will take less.
When they sold my van they were asking 3k more than I wanted. I did not know or care what they ended up selling it for but I was happy with getting what I wanted and I am sure they were happy with what they got . For their part they came took lots of pics, advertise, brought and showed buyer's the van .....paid money into my bank before taking the van 👍
I understand that OP was miffed after he found out about selling price but he had option to say no. They may have come back and took less commission to get the sellers asking price. We will never know, now, all we know is he got his agreed selling price. Yes a little underhanded but they found a buyer that the seller did not .

A little underhanded is a total understatement, I would bet if this gets out there at what has gone on here it would seriously affect their business, who wants to do business with liars?

Try this scam all the time, tell the owner we have had an offer for 4 grand less than they really have and they know some will accept, I certainly couldn't operate like that.

Absolute crooked lying in my opinion.

What happened to honesty?
