When you travel in Europe do you bother with breakdown cover?

Covered for just about every eventuality. UK and Europe. A blocked fuel filter once cost me plenty in France, once bitten, twice shy.

Have not ventured abroad in van yet, but I think I would take out breakdown cover for the peace of mind, especially as the van is rather old.

Yes. Alan once took our son & his friend to the Cote Sauvage for a week surfing etc. Our Mitsubishi Pajero blew up just North of Paris on the first day. He rung Red Pennant (Caravan Club) and they took over - car recovered and caravan towed to a local site, car transported to the garage we bought it from and a 4x4 delivered to Alan the following day for him to carry on. Brilliant service. Who knows what it would have cost us to get the car & caravan back without insurance.

Got insurance & breakdown with Saga, Hymer broke down between Valencia & Zaragosa on a Saturday lunchtime, phoned Saga & within the hour a breakdown vehicle arrived to take us back to repair garage. We had choice of having repair in Spain or return to Uk, lucky we had toad with us so opted for return to Uk with Hymer following later. Absolutely essential to have breakdown insurance, you never know when it is needed especially if driving abroad.

I had a total breakdown outside Salamanca on my way to Portugal

Main bearings collapsed.

No breakdown cover.

It cost €450 to get the van taken to where I needed it.

Had been doing the trip for many years.

I reckon I am well ahead.

Actually I have just remembered that my current Portuguese insurance cover (€245 fully comp) for the Hymer includes Europe wide breakdown cover...

I thought I had but it made me read the small print. RAC Gold Plus with Aviva through AIB and Victor Millwell. Included in the ÂŁ309 we paid this year, would be rude not to. (y)

When full time I only had road side assistance.. they way I figured.. home was the nearest site.. so no point in repatriation.

Before and since I have always had the full cover.. back to base if required.

We listened to your good experience, when chatting at Stratford that you had with Saga, and this year after 9 years with Comfort changed to Saga, very little difference in cost ÂŁ325 but extra cover with Saga.

We got fed up with Saga this year after 7 years, can't fault the policy and breakdown cover, its the way they keep putting the price up, and then you phone and they come back down to earth.
So now with Safeguard, the policy / breakdown and the cost looked good, so we went for it.(y)
After many years with trucks and no breakdown cover, and being held to ransom like a maiden in distress,
Its a no brained ...........breakdown cover for under ÂŁ100.(y). Bob.

It might also be useful to ask who has full medical cover when abroad rather than rely on the reciprocal NHS cover on the European card whose name escapes me as I sit here and with a slipped disc I'm not going to get up and go and look!

1996, then break 'til 2011

European cover is limited to breakdown, max ÂŁ500 per incident, ÂŁ1500 max per year

Presumably because van is 1991

Included in Caravanguard insurance

Could not find 'recovery' cover on the net

I think that is right - there is an age limit on motorhome recovery and there are also servicing requirements to be satisfied in most cases.

Same happened with me after 1 year with Saga, except they wouldn't come down at all. So I too went to Safeguard and paid less than half what Saga wanted for the same cover.

Well we sort of have double breakdown IYSWIM, in that Fiat Assist applies to anything that goes wrong with the Fiat part for 3 years from new, so there's well over 12 months left on that, plus full Euro breakdown cover included on our insurance, the policy automatically includes it as far as I know.
