Son in law, who is a garage mechanic, has told me that the impression of up to 6 months mot holiday is being misinterpreted.
According to his local mot station, if your car/Moho has an expired mot, you can leave the mot off for up to 6 mths if you are NOT using the car, i.e. you can leave it on the road without an mot, but if you use it, even for a quicky to the shops it must be mot’d.
The original idea was for people on furlough and not using their cars
Any mot peeps out the could clarify?

As I read it local MOT station is wrong,it has to be safe to drive, maybe they don't want to lose business!

From the gov.uk site

Eligibility
Your MOT certificate will be extended by 6 months if it was due to expire on or after 30 March 2020 and your vehicle is a:

Has anyone asked if that includes +3500 kgs motorhomes.
I had assumed it did until just now and I'm not so sure anymore.

Mine is still showing a date in June( original date)

Yep mine was due 16 may, now it's due 16 November, not that I can use it ?

As per billym has said, it would appear that +3.5T are not included in the 6month extension scheme. Mine is still showing the due date of 14th June 2020.

The new date Only appears on Gov website a few days before the due date.

the new date gets applied 7 days before it's due on paper

How the 6-month extension works
Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be automatically extended by 6 months if it’s eligible. This will be done about 7 days before it’s due to expire.

This means that:

  • your vehicle will still have a valid MOT certificate for an extra 6 months
  • you can still tax your vehicle - you might need to wait to do this until later in the month if both your MOT and vehicle tax run out this month
  • your insurance will still be valid
  • your vehicle’s record will be updated so the police can see you have a valid MOT
You will not get a new paper MOT certificate with the new expiry date on it.

You must still keep your vehicle safe to drive.

ExampleYour vehicle’s MOT was due to expire on 3 May 2020.
This will automatically be extended to 3 November 2020. You will need to get your MOT by this date.

A +3500kgs van still falls under the Class 4 designation and therefore Should? be in the scheme.
The Private Heavy Goods Class given to it by DVLA is a Taxation Class and nothing to do with it's MOT designation.

Yep mine is 4500kg, was 3 years old on 14th April MOT now due 13th Oct.
The date will only go forward 6 months about 2 weeks or less before the current due date.

Thanks for the clarifications.
We have mothballed it safely under cover for a while before hopefully getting a few things sorted on it after our mad dash back from Morocco.

So does the new date last for six months or a year
it is six months from the date on your paper mot certificate. making it 18 months from last test

We don't want ours to finish end December instead of end June so have booked it in for service and MOT at beginning of June which is a few weeks before it expires.

That is an option but for now a few months delay is good for us.
We have regularly done two MOTs in a year to fit in with our travels so now as there is no prospect of any travels for a while, a few extra months is a mini pay back

So if my original mot is the end of may 2020 and the new date is end of November 2020 when is the mot due in 2021

assuming you put it in for mot in november 2020, it will be november 2021

Yes it seems so but the mots for all those that have an extension until then will make it VERY hard to get one done the end of November, as all those due then plus the previous six month will make it almost impossible. Also for every year after that it will be a bad move to leave it until then, I am going to get mine done earlier to amke it easier in the future.

Mine is 4t mot was due in April. Now due October. So yes over 3.5t is included. The due date shown doesn’t change until a few days prior to mot expires.

The MOT system has always been out of balance with peaks at new registration dates. So March and September are busy months already

My motorhome was three years old on the 11/05/2020 but checked and no details held by DVLA so phoned them and they said they would sort it.
Just had an email from them explaining as follows "that MOT history is not displaying a due date as it does not know when it should be due , This isnt a fault as such because these vehicles are registered as chassis cabs and then the bodies added on afterward. these chassis cabs can turn out to be anything from motorhomes to bin lorries which have different first test dates. I will arrange for the correct date to be added to the record. this should be before the end of the this week."
As my motorhome is a Adria and built in Slovenia , surely it would be delivered to the dealer and he would register it ? Cant understand how it could be registered to a chassis cab in another country ?

KUSKUS That doesn't sound right to me. Surely the first MOT would be due on the 3rd anniversary of the first date of vehicle registration. Obviously slightly different this year due to the 6month extension, so I would expect to see the revised date as 11/11/2020 The only thing is if the MH was registered in another country prior to being imported into the UK.
