Just been told by my garage that has MOT'd my 28ft Tag for the last few years that I have to measure between the centre of the front and rear wheels and if over 4.2 mtrs, they can no longer test it. Must be a change since they did it last year. Am away at there moment so can't measure it till the weekend.

They couldn't suggest where I need to go if they can't do it, but assume a commercial garage.

I have had a quick look through information on the Internet and cannot see anything relating to wheelbase. I have a 5000kg motorhomes 28ft with a tag axle and it was not mentioned to me last time it was done.

I while ago I did ask at Lodge Tyres in Talke if they could MOT my motorhome and they said it depends on the length as their pit was only so long and they had to leave a passage all round the vehicle in case of fire.

Is it just your local garage that is saying this? First time my old 7.5 metre MH went to MOT at my preferred garage they got a tape out to make sure the arms on the 5 tonne lift could stretch far enough.

Maybe it's a stipulation that has been put on their garage by the DVSA when they were last inspected.I know our local one has just had to have a re fit!

Yes, just the garage who have told me but it has not been an issue before.

Is it something to do with their lifting equipment limits rather than MOT changes?
The place I used to use questioned weight and length each year regarding their lift but still did it.

Hmmmm, does seem a bit odd. If the garages pit/lift was fit for purpose last year and nothings changed what’s wrong? Ah DVSA nuff sed :whistle2:

Have they bought a new lift?
Our local commercial garage can't MOT over 3.5t due to the limit on their lift. They can work on trucks over the pit but only have a MOT licence for the lift.

If your looking for somewhere to have the MOT carried out SAS Test and Repair Florida Close off Hot Lane Burslem are who I use and can recommend them. Google maps shows them as LTR Recovery but they changed ownership last year and GM not caught up yet.

Cheers for that. I go to E&M Commercials in Kidsgrove. He looks after the cab and chassis and sorts the MOT. Martin is also a motorhome owner.

If you can't find anywhere suitable, then look no further than your local Council or Bus depot.
Wherever they have their vehicles MOT'd, that place will also do your van.

The bonus is that those premises work on a WYSIWYG basis. (What you see is what you get) In other words, if they see something that is not right, it goes on the Certificate. As they don't do repairs, there isn't any 'Phantom problems' that require non existant repairs.
