Never had to MOT a MH or a 7.5t lorry.

Any one get me up to speed and/or recommend a site in or around Norwich?

Please and thanks ?

V5 Says..

Body type: motorcaravan
Taxation class: private hgv
7500kgs gross

Up to 7500kg and is a motorhome not used for carrying goods it's a standard MOT the same as a car. But you have to find an MOT centre that it can fit in and they can physically do the MOT so would need usually need a pit to fit ot over.

If you take it there it will be interesting to hear how you get on, I know the guys service different fleets not just their own, I did have an issue with a car and took it to my local fleet garage and they sorted it out, it was a competitive price, but as I say it will be interesting to hear how you get on.

I just rang up the one in Norwich to get it booked in. They said because it's had a new body on, it needs to be done by the Ministry. So it can be re weighed for the plate.... What on earth does that mean ? I've found the "plate" has 7500kg gross and then the axel weights. What are they going to weight? What will change? Me no understand

I think the old plate has the specification for the old body, therefore a new body needs a new plate.
Motorhomes I've seen have the original plate and a new one fitted by the converter.

Puzzled. Can any MoT expert tell us what the weight has to do with an MoT test? Garage never has the V5 for any of my vehicles for MoT.
BS detector gone active!

Good luck, hopefully it will all be straight forward and not too expensive.:)

Did you explain that it is a class 4 mot ,same as car & that it is registered as a motorhome & therefore has no need of a weight as long as it is under.

Yes, said all that. I can't get my head round why. I spoke to 3 company's today, and all seemed confused.

Just had mine done last week and apparently they need to know the braking weight for the brake test. Ours is a tag axle on a Fiat Ducato and the handbrake is notoriously difficult to get passed. Apparently, we'd need to get 5 of the 6 wheels to lock out to pass if they new the brake weight. We had a guess that this was GVW (5000kg) minus the converters payload (950kg) so a brake weight of 4050kg. However, because there was no plate stating this (considering there was a Fiat Plate, Alko Plate and Eura Mobil Plate) they decided to use the Decelerometer Test. Passed with flying colours!!

Sorry to hear that, I suspect the Guys will not want to do anything illegal, they are used to standard vehicles, if you think about it from what I understand you have said you are going to place a new body on to the chassis. To me that would sound like a conversion and may need DVLA approval you may want to speak with the DVLA. It may be viewed as a built up vehicle

Some conversions you need a Q plate others you get to keep the original but whatever it sounds like a conversation with the DVLA will help clarify.

Maybe, sounds like its all part of an intriguing Journey you are undertaking, t must be do-able just getting the right forms and checks in place I guess

I took My 'small' previously classed HGV Iveco ex-police office Box Van for a MOT I registered it as a Motor Caravan and took it for a test. The Mechanic said it was a class 4 MOT 'as presented' for MOT.
The V5 log book states HGV and Motor Caravan.
It weighs 3750KGS.

22,000lb (9.82T) R-V. still classed 4 for MOT. Biggest issue was how to test the Shaft Brake (handbrake).!. in the end they took it out on the road and used a Taply meter.

How do they know it's had a body change?
I thought it was already a "Motor Caravan" on the logbook..

I’d guess that you gave them too much info because you’Re an anxious dad ?.
“Hi, I’ve got a Motorhome that needs an MOT, about 5 Tonne and 3 Mtrs high - can you handle it?” Would probably get you a yes/no answer, as long as the V5 is Motorhome (P-HGV) then you are good to go

if weight plate was on the old body, take it off and rivet it on the new one, rub some dirt over the thing, drive it round the field a bit then take it for a class IV somewhere else and say nothing

It's nothing to do with body type i.e motorcaravan. It's a weight thing, done some reading seems to be pretty straight forward. They just do the weights and rewrite the plate.

you just shot yourself in the arse with too much information. just book it in as a 7.5 tonne motorhome. no mention of new body. if asked, (when there with the truck) you are reconfiguring the living space. take the v5 to prove it is a motorhome if queried.
