I was reading a site review earlier (Widdicombe Farm, Devon) that said, and I quote,

Most dog breeds accepted

Granted, I'm still new to this motorhoming malarkey but having stayed on 50+ different sites in two years and having read literally hundreds (and hundreds) of site reviews in magazines and online, never before have I heard of a site that excludes certain breeds of dog.

It stood out, simply because I've never heard of anything like this before.

http://www.theaa.com/campsites/paignton-widdicombe-farm-touring-park-374611

(I've just emailed them to ask for a list of excluded breeds)

Anyone else ever come across a site offering breed-exclusion before?

The only other place I've seen this is Haven.
When you indicate bring a dog on the booking page a warning comes up that there are 3 or 4 breeds which are banned from going to the site.
Can not remember what the breeds where highlighted

No, but it makes sense that they would give a disclosure....

What breed of dog do you have?

many many years! since I was a kid
discrimination against perceived aggressive breeds is common. Staffies, GSDs and rotweilers tend to be on many lists

Interesting...

Who decides? Perception can be a very personal thing, surely?

I'm a member of both clubs and also use private sites regularly too. I've never seen this anywhere before.

Is it mainly private sites that do this?

Thanks, I googled Haven out of interest and found this on their site:

===========================================

What breed of dogs do you allow?

We accept most breeds of dogs but we don’t accept dogs listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act:
  • Pitbull Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Filo Brasiliero
  • Japanese Tosa

For anyone going to France, there are regulations --- certain breeds are banned in France, some have to wear a muzzle in public and campsites can demand to see a current vaccination certificate ( though I can't remember if this was for rabies or the usual dog vaccinations) I never heard of a site insisting on these rules but do recall seeing them in writing.
I can remember seeing on a UK site that they had the right to ask owners to leave if their dog wasn't kept under control but cannot remember where.

Widdicombe got back to me today:

We do not exclude any breeds unless they are on the national banned dog register. If you would like to let me know the breed and how many dogs, the time of year you are interested in, number of nights along with details of whether it is a caravan or motorhome with or without awning etc I will happily try and work out an idea of cost for you.

If this even needed stating, it then almost  begs the question, are there sites which allow banned dog breeds in?!

Unlikely as unless they on the IED (index of exempted dogs) and you can satisfy the fact that it must be kept it a secure place at all times so they can't escape, I can't see it being accepted that this could be a motorhome, caravan or a tent.

And why would any site take such a risk ? but first i'd doubt that the dogs owner could satisfy the first 2 points above.

Could it be a clause in their insurance where they wouldn't be covered if a dog on dangerous dogs list was brought onto the site?

Perhaps it's the some of the dogs owners that need to be excluded

we were on one particular site and the head warden stopped me on the way back from a dog walk to say "we generally dont allow dogs of your breed on our site, but as yours are so well behaved, we will make an exception this time". we needed to go back to the same area again (several times) and when we phoned up and spoke to the wardens we mentioned the conversation and were never stopped again
