As someone who has suffered bad reactions from mosquitos (and other gogos) all my life, what I've found to be effective is putting Vick or Tiger Balm on the bite for quick relief but importantly, also ensure you take antihistamines if you react badly. Cortisone creams for topical application and tablets such as Piriton or other non-drowsy antihistamine tablets.
If a blister forms, don't pop it and keep it clean and covered. Any red streaks emanating from the bite, go to the doctor, sharpish!

I spent a week wild camping on a beach in Scotland in July, and I used the above stuff. Not a single mosquito or midge bite anywhere.

There were guys around me with those netting head covers still swatting them off - I didn't need one.

Sadly it didn't stop the ticks getting to me but I was lucky. Another chap ended up hospitalised with Lyme Disease.
