used to be lots of them during the 60,s early 70,s .
remember the locals getting tractors pulling spray machines every day coming round .
mind most local towns are a bit inland and up the hills a bit. no mozzies then. they really only were around the rice fields areas.
blame the irish. hee hee ,
there are still a few paddy fields left in spain around that area.
but there was lots of rice growing fields that got flooded regularly.
the new tourist town areas are built on the old fields .
spain was famous or rice growing years ago.

A bit worrying but I wonder how long they need to go from egg to adult? Will the water drain away first?

Interesting second article on that link about loggerheads breeding in Murcia. Sounds a bit tenuous but it would be great if they returned in numbers. And I guess they are impervious to mozzies too. :)

Years Tugging - Newbie MHing
We were at Los Alcázares, one of the worst flooded areas of spain, on Wednesday and went down to the beach with the dog. It’s utter devastation in terms of lost sea front bars etc and the sands are completely destroyed.

The dog ran down to the water and we followed only to realise what looked like sand was actually inches of thick mud. Later that evening, both my wife and I found our legs really stinging, feeling like they were on fire.

Within an hour we both showed around 20 midge bites on our lower legs (each leg). The bites haven been driving us both nuts for days now, and the wife’s have all tuned into large blisters. One of them seemed to penetrate my calf muscle to the point I couldn’t stand upright without pain, though that has subsided today (Saturday). We didn’t actually see any insects but they were obviously in the mud.

They still had roads an tunnels closed yesterday when we left Los Alcázares heading north.

Dog seems fine though, so that’s ok ?

The tiger mossies population round here has exploded since the rains, they will probably be around until December now.

This probably explains why it’s so busy here. We’re at La Finca at Tavernes and it’s absolutely packed.
