All my working life I have used Morse tapers without giving them a second thought, but having decided to 3D print a rack for my lathe tools I wanted to make holes match 2 and 3 Morse so a quick Google for the tables and I find every single taper is a slightly different angle?? 2M has an angle of 1.4307 3M has an angle of 1.4377.
I was baffled as to way this should be so a bit of googling and the answer appears to be that Stephen Morse (who to my surprise was an American) came up with his taper in 1864, he had two sets of master gauges made, one set he kept the other was sent to the bureau of standards in Washington DC and accepted as the national standard. Because machining accuracy wasn't that good in those days we end up with this raft of different angles.

What a lovely thread, and I wish I had been around here to participate. I lost my test pieces many years ago: the most difficult one was a 4" x 2" double dovetail in 3/8" MS, which had to fit together either way. If the instructor could insert a 0.0015" feeler in any gap you lost marks.

We had to hatch cut, then chisel off and file flat and square a piece of inch square ms. When the instructor wasn't around, we'd get one of the second years to face it off for us in the 4 jaw chuck on the lathe !
Still got my drill point angle gauge and toolmaker's clamp, but can't find my screw cutting fish tail gauge, might have a look for one on the net ?
And today's job will be stripping down my Metabo keyless chuck. Been using an inch blacksmith's drill in it and it had spun on the Jacob's taper a couple of times, then didn't want to undo by hand, it is over 30 years old and has had a lot of use.

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
Which chucks do you guys favour?
I have a few Cardinals which I was very lucky to find as old new stock, still wrapped in their original grease paper.
